Foglight Bulb Upgrade
By Chris

John
First I had to gain access
to the back of the foglight housing. I decided to cut 2 of the plastic
fasteners and replace them later with reusable ones. After making
some working room, I removed the foglight housing using a 10MM socket
with a short extension.
Removing the foglight
housing, I was able to easily work on changing the bulb.
The first pic shows the
stock 9055 bulb and the way the plastic tabs line up to the mounting
ring on the back of the foglight.

The next picture shows
the 9005 bulb and the difference in alignment of the plastic tabs
to the mounting ring.

Notice that there is
a slight difference in the alignment of the tabs to the slots in
the mounting ring. I found that if you tilted the 9005 bulbs " 12
O’Clock" tab into the slot first ( with the headlight housing upside
down, note the position of the vent tube) you could then slip the
" 8 O’ Clock" tab into position and then the " 4 O’Clock" tab would
then follow, fully seating the bulb into the socket.

Once the new bulb was
installed on the passenger side, I took a head on picture to compare
the difference in brightness

Notice the difference??
I then waited till dark and aimed the old 9055 bulb side higher
than the new 9005 bulb and aimed it at my white garage door.

Now THAT is a noticeable
difference!! The new 9005 bulb is not only brighter, but it also
seems to have a tighter and narrower beam then the stock 9055. And
there is only a 7 watt rated difference on the bulb!
Special
thanks to John
from the forum for the information above.

The above
write-up featured a Sylvania Cool Blue bulb. The 9055 bulb has a
coated tip to it, so any 9005 bulb will be better than it. As you
will soon see, the PIAA 9005 bulb offers an even greater improvement.
The early
9055 bulbs appeared to be rated at 53 watts (2000 WJ) while newer
ones are rated at 55 watts (2001 WJ). So it was only a 5 watt difference
between a 9055 and a 9005 in the 2001 WJ test vehicle.
One other
thing I would like to note. It is possible to take out the headlights
without the removing the 2 plastic fasteners. It isn't really easy,
but it is possible to simply wedge your hand and socket in there
and loosen the two nuts that hold the fog light in, push the assembly
forward, then disconnect the electrical connector, and swap in the
9005 bulb.
