Rock Krawler XJ Super 8 Plus Long Arm Lift Kit w/ Rear Coil Over Shock Conversion
User Rating: / 36

Thursday, 04 January 2007

The XJ Cherokee has gained popularity in off road circles over the past few years. As the pool of affordable XJs increases more and more four wheelers are turning their eyes to these capable 4x4 wagons. Though they often get branded as grocery getters or mall crawlers the XJ enthusiasts are die hard fans and this fanaticism has drawn the attention of aftermarket companies. The end result has been a huge increase in the parts available for XJs from lift kits to armor and bumpers. In this article we'll address the installation of the Rock Krawler XJ Super 8 Plus long arm w/ rear coil over conversion lift kit. The Rock Krawler kit contains the arms, brackets, front coils, and rear coil over shocks. This Cherokee was already running the Rock Krawler long arm upgrade with a Rusty's lift kit. Rock Krawler sent their new bent lower control arms (more on those later) and their complete rear triangulated 4-link setup with coil over shocks.

Ford 8.8 Axle Upgrade

Installing a Ford 8.8 axle in a Jeep has become a very easy and popular swap to replace the weak Dana 35 that comes from the Factory in many YJ's and TJ's. I had installed one in a YJ this year to replace an ARB locked Dana 35 with stock shafts. I know, crazy eh? But hey, I didn't do it.

I picked up the 8.8 from my good friend John at Auburn Car Repair and Off-Road just south of Seattle for $150. It had 4.11 gears from the factory, and disc brakes. The gear ratio matched what the Jeep was geared with, and the disc brakes were quite a bonus. I installed an ARB air locker, welded on new spring pads and shock mounts from MORE, and bolted it in.

The 8.8 is an excellent choice for most Jeepers, but it is not without its shortcomings. The axle shafts are retained by c-clips, which generally speaking, is not that big of a deal. Personally speaking, I just don't like this method of shaft retention on a modified vehicle that will be abused. Another issue is weak shaft flanges. I've seen several reports where the flange was bent while the Jeep was maneuvering in an off camber situation in big rocks.

In May of this year I attended the annual JeepsUnlimited event Moab, Utah where a potluck dinner was held mid-week and door prizes were given out from a wide variety of vendors.

I was fortunate to receive an aluminum fuel tank skid plate that was provided by Toys By Troy out of Phoenix. This Company manufactures impressive products for Jeeps, and I am impressed with this skid. It is very light, yet quite strong with a double layer of aluminum plate on the bottom where strength is needed most. Check them out at http://www.toysbytroy.com/

Installing Rokmen's Mercenary Bumper!

One of the first modifications every Jeeper completes is to swap the stock bumpers for something that handles more abuse and adds a bit of style to their Wrangler. Nothing changes the attitude of your Wrangler more than replacing the thin sheet metal Daimler-Chrysler gives you from the factory.

When I wanted to upgrade the front bumper on my 2004 Wrangler Unlimited, I had a few requirements. First, it must have an integrated winch mount. In an effort to keep my vehicle as slim as possible, a bumper with a separate winch mount adds weight that I did not need to carry around all the time. Second, it must have a winch guard. I wanted one for the extra protection but also for the appearance. A winch is an expensive piece of equipment and providing it with a little bit of protection is a good thing. Third, shackle mounts that are not welded to the face of the bumper. Something welded on the front and back helps spread out the load. Lastly, it must provide better clearance. Clearance is the key to our hobby. Anytime you can gain clearance, you're improving the off road ability of your vehicle.

On common and easy to perform upgrade to squeeze more power out of a vehicle is to install a cold air intake. These intakes are generally less restrictive and often allow colder air into the engine. Follow along as we install a kit from AEM, The first impressions of the box and packaging was impressive, the package arrived promptly and in good shape. The box was a little large for the pieces in it. But otherwise it was exactly what was expected.
