There was a time when the off road industry could be described as a fledgling market segment. The average shop had to figure out what it wanted to do about marketing and how best to find their own place in the market place. These days the industry has come into its own. There are trade shows, major marketing companies, business oriented periodicals and major corporate sponsors for off road events and teams. While Sema has long been the trade show where all things automotive would be put on display the sheer enormity of this show made it hard to navigate and impossible to fully experience in the single week the show is run. There was a need for a trade show that offered a target experience to the off road crowd.

For the last 5 years JU members have been making a trek out to Moab, Utah for the Annual JU Moab Run. 2006 proved to be no different as JU members from far and wide loaded up their rigs and headed out for a week of four wheeling and meet and greet fun. Even this lowly site admin (CJSIXER for those of you who only know my screen name) hopped a plane out to the desert to link faces with names and to join in the antics.

This year's event ran from Saturday May 6th until Saturday May 13th. This week was picked because there were no major events being held by other groups. While senior mod Larry Nickel and I both arrived in town on the 5th most of the group would not get into town until Saturday or Sunday that weekend. Our first day of wheeling was a totally scenic affair with Dome, T.dome and his family leading our small group out to Klondike Bluffs and assorted other scenic locals. There were multiple outlooks that offered breath taking views. Most of the outlooks in Moab require that you hike the final distance which can be quite a work out in the hot desert sun. By Sunday the group had grown considerably. Roughly a dozen rigs headed out for Elephant Hill to take in the sites.

How many Jeepers wish that they would have had the opportunity when they were growing up to learn the skills necessary to set up a ring and pinion or build a custom axle? These are the type of skills that most Jeepers have to pay good money to farm out because they are well beyond the capabilities of the average shade tree mechanic. What if the opportunity would have been there to learn these skills in a high school setting? For 9 kids in Salem, Ohio the opportunity was there and the result was a competition level TJ.

A short 6 months ago my friend and machine trades teacher Matt Peters contacted me with an idea. Due to cut backs in funding his program had no way to purchase new a new mill or lathe for their program. In an effort to come up with a long term product for the kids to work on and become excited about as well as to come up with a way to fund the purchase of a new machine or two for the shop. Being the owner of an off road shop Matt knew about Jeeps. His idea was to build up a TJ in the class and then use it to compete in the Uroc East series for two years. At the end of two seasons of competition the Jeep would be raffled off and the proceeds would be used to purchase the machines that the program needed.

Depending on what area of the country a Jeep owner lives in it is not always easy to find a place to wheel. Especially on the east coast it can be difficult to find land that is open to the public. Private land often cannot be entered with out knowing the right people. Even if trails can be located finding people to four wheel with can be tough, especially when moving to a new area. Luckily for Jeep owners everywhere Jeep Jamboree USA has been providing a solution to this problem for years.
