Default Clutch.tranny rattle noise? Help

I have a 2005 wrangler sport, 40k miles. For quite a while I've had an issue where sometimes at idle there is this sound coming from under the car that sounds like something is banging and/or rattling around - almost like something is loose? It's difficult to describe. It's a very inconsistent sounding noise. It does it at idle and I can really make the noise loud by giving the gas a gentle tap. Just as it revs, the noise gets loud and then goes away as the revs climb. Interstingly, when I push in the clutch and do the same thing, the sound is gone and it sounds fine.

Any ideas? Could this be my throw out bearing? I took it to the dealer before and they told me they couldn't reproduce it.. annoyingly enough, sometimes it doesn't do it. However, when it does, it sounds like something is going to just fall apart.

I'm about to go back to the dealer on a separate issue and want to bring this up again but I want to be armed with some better information. The fact that pushing in the clutch makes the sound go away makes me think it is clutch/tranny related. When it first happened I thought my catalytic converter was broken inside and rattling around.

Any help is appreciated - Thanks!

It's called neutral rattle and is a normal noise.

Thanks for your reply. I have difficulty believing this noise is normal? It's a pretty loud and inconsistent banging? There are times when it doesn't appear to be doing it at all, sometimes very slight, and other times it's borderline embarassing how loud it is. This is normal?

Yeah, it's normal. It's really embarrassing when you turn your Jeep off with the clutch released and it rattles like it's chewing up marbles.

I put Royal Purple fluid in mine and it's much quieter. Still audible though.

Icon920 same thing?

Dont mean to bring a semi-dead thread back alive but does this sound about the same?

Just got an 01 wrangler sport with 95k and when I am rolling to a stop if I push the clutch in I can hear somewhat of a rattle noise like something is loose, and likewise when I am at an idle and the clutch is out I get a rattle noise. Oddly though, when I am rolling to a stop, if I roll and let the clutch out with it in neutral before I stop and then I come to a stop, it generally will not make the rattling noise.

Just wanted to see if this was similar? If so, its a pain but I hope I dont have to worry about it.

Thanks everyone for their input, hope to have some pics of the new jeepster up soon!

an easy way to identify the noise is to turn off the jeep while in neutral and with the clutch pedal released. It will sound like marbles rattling.
