Default need help please

I need a torque converter and shift kit for my 98 5.9l

When I am laying down the power It feels like it kicks in and out in 3rd. I don't think the stock converter is staying locked.

I also tow with my 98 so I would like to be able to still do that after the changes.

Thanks,

Any tip from others are doing would be greatly appreciated

Have you got on it at high speeds with over drive off, i notice sm type of lock unlock at high speeds 3rd gear ish i think the PCm is just confused or smthing, with OD off i go through 2nd then through 3rd then before red line hit the OD button witch gets it into 4th. I think the PCM and electronicly controled tranny get confused when your finishing 3rd gear over the original govoner mph, and then go into 4th. Just thinking of other things a new converter would be nice anyway.

I personally think you are right rob, it has done this before and after the flash of the ecu. The kickdown cable that is on the throttle body is where I think the bigger issue might be. I never have felt that is was set correctly, but the guy at the tranny shop says it is.

I had a pretty good friend/tranny tec at dodge set/tighten my cable and i dnt think it would be the problem, i think it wants to shift into 4th at what ever set mph/rpm and then it realizes its WOT OD off stuters/surges and keeps going in 3rd, i would think sm kind of PCM/electric tranny issue like a cousin of torqe management if im even on the right page or we are talking about the same thing.

it did it with both tunes, old and new, I went and bought a new rev 3 valve body assembly and new torque converter from wayne at aps. Hopefully when my box of joy gets here I won't have this issue anymore.

from my understanding from wayne at aps here is the deal. The vlave body on these things is problematic, it is semi electronically controlled, so he offers a shift kit and some other mods to go into the valve body. I actually bought a fully built valve body put together by APS, it will basically drop right into the tranny. The old kits required a resistor that effected how the computer controlled trans. This new rev uses no resistor and has different modifications to the valve body. This is all far out of my relm because I am no tranny guy. But what wayne said is that I should recieve about 70 more ft/lbs of torque to the wheels at launch. If that just cures the laxed shifting that I have now and gives me any kind of performance boost I will be happy with the money spent. It was about $1200 for the built valve body and the converter. Wayne at APS actually drives a 5.9 limited so he takes great pride in his work. you can do it in stages, but buying the complete valve body done by a trans guy with 25 years of expieriance is almost priceless. If you have questions email him off of the website http://www.apsprecision.com/ and he will call you and tell you more about that tranny than you ever wanted to know. He likes to drive his jeep hard just like us, so I feel like this has been money well spent.

A 70 lb/ft increase in torque would be huge by seat of the pants feel, and should definitely show up on paper too. Is any flash of the PCM necessary to get results?
I would be interested in any details you can give as to the improvements achieved with the APS valve body. Before and after track times would be excellent, although I'm mostly interested in the valve body itself, as I already have a stall converter. And if you are doing your own install, a writeup would be very nice. If it truly is a "drop-in" performance upgrade, I may have to pull the trigger.
Keep us posted,
Mojo

mojo with a built tranny I am sure you would see some differences, but I am not sure what all is done to your ride. Mine is going from a stock rebuilt tranny to the new setup. I will keep everyone posted as we go along.

2800 Billet TC from EDGE Racing (Andre - owner)
Andre says he is assembling this one himself. $454.50. Through Dec.... should be here this coming week. I installed the APS custom valve body this weekend, take a look at my build up thread for links to pics....
