I have a fairly new Starter and lately I have been getting a grinding noise when started. I ramoved the Starter over the weekend and found that the teeth on flywheel towards the front of the engine are getting tore up? The Starter teeth look OK.
My question is how can I tell if the starter is not going in far enough? or if it is going to far? Is there any way to check and correct? TIA Jim (PS I will be traveling the next few days so I may not get back to this until Thursday, Thanks)

I'm not sure how to check exactly, but on my old CJ2A I'd clamp the starter down on a bench and apply juice from a battery via jumper cables to see if the starter was engaging and pushing out far enough. Probably not the safest way, but it worked for me when my starter was frozen sometimes...

Thanks for the reply,
Thats what I ended up doing and it was the starter. It had a year warranty on it so I got it replaced for free. Thanks again
