Took a trip to the mountains today and on the way back I got the idea for a bike carrier. This is the first design - it probably needs some tweaking. I'm guessing it'd be on the heavy side, but easy to adapt to add one or two more bikes to it. It's also got an area to mount some of those oval (or round) S/S/T LED lights...
![]() Any ideas? I know Scott00TJ had mentioned this about a month ago. |

From the view above, the part to the left fits in a 2" receiver. The part at the top most portion of the screen is where the front forks would attach with a quick release type bolt. The rear tire of the bike sits at the bottom right of the screen and is strapped in place on the L shaped metal (which is mounted like a V). The inverted Z bend starting 18" from the left is an attempt at gaining some clearance/departure angle if you actually take this on some light offroading. It should clear a large (31"-35") tire and then bend up.
Here's another view.... ![]() In this view, the front forks attach to the stud at the bottom center, the rear tire is strapped down to the upper left, and the whole thing fits into a receiver at the upper right. Does that make sense? |

Good design. It's been done before. Only drawback is that if you get rear ended, the bike takes the hit.

That is the original sportworks design.
It is a better option to buy a tray that mounts to the reciever hitch then mount a couple of fork / skewer mounts. Then you have a tray for camping when you do not have your bikes. Quote:

I've never seen the sportworks design. It's a really simple idea, especially if I can hammer it out in a few minutes as my first project working with Sketchup. Another reason for the design is the fact that I have some 2" laying around, a welder that needs to be broken in, and L metal is fairly cheap.

Also, as another option, you can use C-Channel instead of angle for the bike to sit on. It's not so much of a big deal in design change, but if one is cheaper than the other, you might save some cash!

I dont see any stability in that design. you have a bolt going in at the very bottom of the front fork with a COG way higher then that, and a strap around the bottom of the back wheel. I think there needs to be some sort of support up higher.
