2005 Liberty Limited, 3.7L, automatic transmission. This seems to occur after driving for a while when all parts are at operating temperature. When you are at a stop and then begin to accelarate, most of the time there is a definite clunk/thud coming from the rear of the vehicle. It does not occur from the transmission shifting. The dealership looks at us cross-eyed and of course can't reproduce the problem.
Has anybody experience this in their vehicle? What was the problem?

My dad's '05 does the same thing. Doesn't feel like the typical driveline slack; more like the axle moving back and forth. Both brake calipers were replaced so it doesn't seem to be a sticking caliper. Dealer is unable to reproduce the problem as well.

I have a 95 GCL-ZJ with 105k on it that does the same thing, under moderate to hard acceleration.
I suspect it has something to do with rear axle torque windup, axle bumpers, shock mounts, or maybe bad shocks. When in 4wheel drive, the noise stops. When in 2wheel drive (rear wheel drive) the back squats more, and does the clunk/thud easer. Because I drive rather conservatively, and in 4Wheel drive most of the time, it has never been a serious issue. I plan to replace the exhaust some time this week, and will do a more detailed inspection into the problem and keep you updated if I find a cause. |

I have notice the slack in the driveline as well and also notice that this goes away in part-time & full-time 4WD as well. What I am experiencing is a thud like as in a soft pound on the tailgate.
Keep me posted. |

I have an '06 CRD that had the same problem. My dealer replaced the sway bar end links and I haven't heard the noise since. Mine also sounded like it was coming from the rear.. Hope this helps.

I feel a suspension/driveline windup clunk when cold, only once, only ~50ft after a stop when speeding up fairly briskly. But there is a spot each morning on my drive that hits all these rules and I feel it like clockwork.
