I've installed a new LUK clutch and the throw-out bearing appeared to be greased already but it came with a zirk fitting. Was I supposed to add more grease prior to install or is that for maint? A friend said they put that there because some vehicles have an inspection plate and you can periodically re-grease it.

Yes, some bell housings allow access to the TOB, but having the zerk there won't do you a bit of good w/ a CJ. |

I made sure the "snout" was clean and had a light coating of grease on it. Used my finger to put a little more grease on the inside of the throwout bearing. All seems fine right now... Oh, make sure the zerk is on tight. Mine was very loose (I was afraid it would come off while driving).
This stupid thing cost me an extra weekend wrenching. I took it out while test fitting the pilot bearing and making sure all was aligned (again, I was afraid it would fall out in the bell housing and didn't have a wrench to tighten it handy). Forgot I had taken it out, till I was all done and picking up the tools and noticed it sitting on the floor. Needless to say, I had to pull the tranny again to put it back on!!! Oh, what joy... |
