Hello everybody!
I have cherokee 4.0, 97/98 year model. Some problems with overheating and this and that, as usual. But there is different thing: "CE" lamp is switching on sometimes, but I can not read error codes. I have tried all kinds of tricks with ignition key, that I could find in web. All the gauges and lamps on cluster are flashing and jumping, but no code at the end is shown. "CE" is still on. I borrowed OBDII scanner (ScanTool.net) which, after some problems with usb-rs232 adapter, finally successfully connects to ECU, says it could connect to data bus, but cannot read data. Few local repair shops that work with American vehicles are overloaded, so I would have to wait a few weeks to get my jeep checked. What can this be? Faulty computer? -- KPL |

Good question!! Mine does the same thing...check engine light will come on every so often and stay on for anywhere from a few hours to a few days...autozone hooked up a scanner and said there were no codes... the dealer even scanned and said no codes...
A mechanic I know said there are two scans that they can run, a quick easy one that only checks back a few days or so and a deep scan that takes longer to run but goes all the way back. Anyone heard of this?

It's not like there are no codes to read, it's just impossible to read them, and read anything from the ECU.
Scanner should be able to read directly data from all the sensors, read tacho, and a lot more when the engine is running. But it just says that it connected to data bus, shows some standard/version number, and that's it.

some where in 97/98 DC changed the ability to read these codes from the CE light, You can get a code scanner from most autoparts stores, either they do it, or they loan it to you. I ended up buying a cheap one at Walmart of all places, to reset the light occasionally.
