Icon5a What type of seats to salvage?

Hi, I have to replace both my front seats and was wondering what seats would look better in my cj?
Is there a specific donor car/truck I should look at?
What seats from a scrap vehicle have other people used?
Thanks for the input..... :mrwave:

Corbeau makes a new "Moab" direct bolt in racing seat for CJ/YJ applications. They aren't advertised much yet but available.

Why not buy some new seats? Bestop and others make some nice ones...

It would be nice to buy "new" seats but I think used ones would be quite a bit cheaper. Guess it really depends on $$.

I used some Prelude seats for a while. They are pretty comfy, but I later upgraded to some PRP's.

There's some good links here;

I'd personally stay away from bestop seats. I have a pair, and although they are comfortable, the padding is too thick and it sits you way up high. My wife can't even drive the CJ comfortably now! Not to mention the bikini top slaps me on the head going down the road. I'm going to change them out soon after almost a year of use. Good luck

I saw a link on the internet somewhere about mustang seats from the 80's are near direct swap with only one new bolt hole. I also remember people using Fiero seats as they have speakers in the headrest and Volvo seats as they have heated seats if you want to wire it up. Most anything can work with some fab skills. My next seats will probably be swapped in TJ seats someday.

Hmmmmm Never thought of using TJ seats. Has anyone out there used TJ seats? Are they roughly the same size as the stock ones?

I am in the process of putting a set of seats from a ford contour in my 84 CJ 7. Not my first choice but I got them for free from a coworker, so the price was right. The sliders on the ford seats are the same width as the risers in the jeep. I just have to remove the factory risers on the ford seats. So it should be a pretty easy swap. Both seats recline and the driver seat is even power so they will be a definite upgrade.
If you’re looking for cheap sets I would try a local junk yard.

I've seen several people state that 94+ Camaro seats are a bolt in swap to a YJ. Should be very close if not bolt in for a CJ as well.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm going to check the TJ seats at the scrap yard and I'll have a look at the Contour and Camaro seats as well.

Here’s one you never would have thought of: Mercedes Benz.

Most of their seats from the 80s and early 90s were covered with a material called MB Tex – it’s just a fancy form of vinyl. But the stuff wears like Kevlar, and is pretty darn comfortable. It’s the perfect material for Jeep, since it stands up real well to sunlight, and physical abuse, and can simply be hosed off if it gets mud & dirt on it. If you see a Benz in the boneyard, take a look at the seats -- I've never seen an MB Tex covered seat that even had so much as a tiny tear in it.

I have no idea how the mounts would line up, but it might be worth looking into.
