WITH THIS INFORMATION, THE DEALER HAS AGREED TO REPLACE THE IGNITIION CYLINDER; I ASKED THAT THEY CHECK THE OTHER GRAND CHEROKEES TO SEE IF IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM SEVERAL DAYS AGO, BUT THEY HAVE NOT YET RESPONDED. AS SHE PULLED FORWARD-A DISTANCE OF 10 FEED, SHE CAME TO A GRADUAL STOP JUST BEFORE THE MAIL BOX. THE CAR THEN LEAPED FORWARD AT HIGH ACCELERATION SMASHING OFF TWO MAILBOXES MOUNDED ON A 4*4 POST SPLITTING IT IN HALF, THEN WENT APPROXIMATELY 15 FEET BEFORE CRASHING THROUGH A SNOW BANK AND HITTING A LARGE WOODED HEDGE. DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO LARGE SCRATCH IN THE HOOD, SMALL DENTS ABOVE HEAD LIGHT, DENT ON FRONT QUARTER PANEL , AND SMALL DENT ON RIGHT DOOR. WE HAVE FILED A POLICE REPORT, CONTACTED OUR INSURANCE AGENT, AND CONTACTED CHRYSLER WHO PROMISED TO DO AN INVESTIGATION NEXT WEEK. MY ASSESSMENT IS THE BREAK PEDAL, AND THE GAS PEDAL IS 2.5 INCHES APART, AND WHEN YOU SLOWLY APPLY THE BREAK IT WILL SQUASH TO THE POINT THAT IT IS AT OR BELOW THE GAS PEDAL LEVEL. IF WEARING HEAVY SHOES OR BOOTS THIS CAUSES THE SIDE OF THE SHOE TO HIT THE GAS PEDAL THEREFORE THE RAPID ACCELERATION OF THE VERY RESPONSIVE 5.7 HEMI ENGINE. Who the hell are driving these things and are so large that they bump the ignition switch. Didn't these people test drive the thing before buying it? I'm 6'4" and my leg doesn't even come close to the ignition switch. I love how the ignition is on the dash now. Maybe these people should try putting the seat back more. There are so many people who sit way to close to the steering wheel.

Nevertheless, I will pay careful attention to the brake/throttle relationship and the key problem. Especially with big boots. The frozen window....not a pro problem in Tucson. Personally, I reall appreciate this being brought to the forum.....who knows, a mishap may have been avoided.

That's just how lazy people have become... They can't move their foot far enough to depress only one pedal. That's good stuff.
Thanks for that, I haven't laughed like that since i was 7. As stated, move your seat, or join the NBA and have someone drive you. I love how it says that these people could've died or that these situations were potentially fatal. I wish there was a video of these people rocketing their cars off and knocking down two mailboxes. Priceless.

Now the frozen window thing, I had a rental car in northern Alberta do the same thing.....-47 degrees for the two weeks I was up there. The outside mirrors had 1/2 of ice that never came off and the windshield would sleet up with the heat and defrosters on high. Are those safety problems?
Then there was the Moose on the road.

Yep, I wear a Size 13 shoe and never seem to have a problem. Even with boots. Yes, the WK has less room in the footwell than other vehicles, but it's not bad enough to be a problem for me.

I had an 06 rental this past weekend. I had no problem with the gas/brake pedals, but did experience the shutting off the ignition with my knee. I was on I95 in light traffic, cruise control on. I moved my leg to adjust my position in the seat and hit the key and shut it down. I am only 5'-11", but have long legs (32 inseam pants). The seat was adjusted back and slightly reclined so my knee was closer to the dash.

Try driving a Mazda3. The brake pedal is so close to the gas pedal, even with my shoe rubbing against the center console wall to the right, I still sometimes clip the brake pedal.
BTW, no problems with my WK at all, besides my regret for not buying a 4x4

The ignition key thing is a minor annoyance. I'm 6'6" and my knee can hit it (39" inseam). I just make sure to put the key in so that the hole for the keyring is on top. Once you are aware of it, it shouldn't be a problem however. FWIW my wife is 5'11" and she has hit it before but not to the point of turning the switch off.
If you're going to put the key in the dash and not the column, put it on the left side for LHD cars as God and Ferry Porsche intended. This was for the old LeMans style starts, the right hand was on the gear shift and the left activated the starter. Not sure how those drivers got their belts on though. Brian

On the gas/brake pedal front, I'm surprised that DCX didn't make it so that if your foot was on the brake, the DBW throttle is closed. My 2001 Audi did this, you had to time your heel-toe shifts so that you always got the brake first. If you had your foot on the throttle and then got the brake the throttle closed. Audi is pretty conscienous about this however (d*mn 60 minutes and the 5000s).
In general my belief on the "unintended" acceleration is that most Americans should only be licensed to drive tricycles anyway. Most of my cars have been manual transmission with pedals close together and I've never had a problem getting the wrong pedal (even with 2 "brake" pedals and size 13 clod hoppers ).

I'm 6-9 (svelt) and learned my lesson after hitting it once. Still want to get my hands on the engineer who decided to put the ignition in its current position rather than on the center console.

you are 6'9"??? I am 6'4" and almost didn't buy this car because of the height of the seats.. My head is about 2" from the ceiling, seat all the way back. How the heck did you fit in this thing?

I'm 6'-3" and if I don't lower the pedals and back up the seat some after my mom has driven it, I hit the key and have turned it off several times. If it were on the column like it is supposed to be it would be a non-issue. Kinda sucks but o'well what doesn't suck about it.
