Hi all,
I am in the process of buying new tires and am not too sure which way to go. I have a 2 in BB and a 1 in BL so both the 31's and 33's (both 10.50R15's) will fit my TJ (4.0 Sport, 5 sp), but since this is my daily driver I am concerned about power loss with the 33's. (I dont really want to re-gear at this time) Is there that much of a difference on the highway and on hills? And does anyone run the same set up with the 33's experience any rubbing while wheeling? Thanks

What gearing & engine do you have? That'll really determine how much either tire will affect performance.
Mine feels great, hardly noticeable loss in power, 6cyl, 5spd, 3.73's, 31x10.5 TrXus. |

uhhhhhh... he said he has a 4.0.
Anyway....... If you want the 33's go for it. There is a difference in accelaration. It's nothing that is difficult to deal with. As for tires rubbing flares...... just extend the bumpstops if necessary with the 33's. Another option would be to pick up a set of 32's and call it good.

I have the same engine as you, the 6 cyl. with 3.73 gears, and it is a 5 speed.
I am more concerned with the power loss with 33's not the 31's. Thanks

You will lose pick up, but if you run rocks it is a good trade off from that metal sound that you here underneath so often with 31's.

I think you will be fine. All us who had stock 3.07s realize that 33s and 3.73s with 4.0L/5speed combo is actually a pretty good setup. I ran 35s and 4.10s for 2 years and loved it. I ran 70mph at 2100 rpms in 5th gear. You could always go with 33x10.5s to save on some weight.

With 3.73s and 33x10.5 tires it would probably be just fine. You aren't going to win any drag races. 5th gear will be reserved for highway crusing only pretty much, you will have to go to 4th to pass or climb any significant hills.
With my 4.11s which are just a little deeper than the 3.73 I can maintain on the highway pretty well. Any significant hills still require 4th. No rubbing with either 31s or 33s in the BFG variety. I ran both on my TJ. I got shots of both in my www .

I ran the same set up for quite a while (33x12.50 MT/R's with 4.0 and 5 spd + 3.73 gears) and it worked great. With the pizza cutters the 'power loss' is even gonna be less noticeable. If you want 33's -> get them right away

I ran 33s for years and a good freind of mine told me something that stuck, you get only 1 inch extra clearance and lose a bunch of power, that sold me.
I now run 31s and don't even notice the diff on the trails ask yourself this, how many times am I going be doing magazine stuff? and 33s will not get you anywhere close to mag stuff experiance will outweigh equiptment every time |

---- I agree, experience is a big piece of the pie when it comes to wheelin. But to say that experience will out equipment EVERY TIME is just absurd. Sorry, not trying to start a flame war, but that's quite a blunt statement to make.

Yeah, I've been through all three in 18k miles and I would say just step up to the 33's or you'll wish you had later

I have a 4 banger, so I'm not lookin to go much higher than the 31s. If you have a 6 cylinder I'd say go with the 33s.
