You know I didn't much like learning to drive stick, but now that I have I don't think I'll ever go back. I just feel like I have more control. And if you need to do that tricky gas and braking for limited slips then you can get a hand throttle and how cool is that, who else has one of those!?!?

Stick shift rules!!:rockz:

Unless you have a really nice gear set up were you have the torque and slowness to not touch the clutch, if at all, then the standard is fine. Otherwise, auto all the way. I LOVE autos. Stuck with a stick until it finally blows up.

Manual, especially for highway use, an overdrive is really nice, also helps with low range speed, plus you can't beat the fun of driving a manual, on and off road

those of you that love sticks have obviously never had the pleasure of 3 footing it to make it up a tricky hill climb. i used to love sticks, now that i have an auto, there is no way i would ever go back. also remember how quality the original sticks were? i would steer clear of a manual if i were you. they may be easier to work on, but never once in the first 250,000 on my rig was the tranny ever worked on, other than tranny flushes twice a year (get them done at work for $20 as opposed to the $140 most places charge).

Manual.

Once I learned to drive a stick shift, I decided I would never own another automatic.

Ummm Yeah I have done the three footed dance up a nasty hill...... and I have driven an auto up the same hill and still would take a manual over the auto any time anywhere any how.

See my first post.. its personal preference....

Some like the ease of a auto and others like the control a manual has as well as the challenge it will bring. Is one person a better driver than the other nope... its all what you like to do and how you like to do it..

This question is just like the D30/D44 debate.. it will never end and people will always disagree

I don't know what would be better off road but 99 % of the on road time a manual transmission has to be the choice if you like having control fun. i wish i had the off road experience to comment, but not yet

You can't do 70 in 3rd gear in the auto at least not to my knowledge(, it may not be good for the jeep either but when its not yours why not race the rice burners eh?)

says you. Ever tear apart a c4? very simple tranny to rebuild.

I pulled my ax5 for an auto, but my auto is gonna be behind a v8.

With the 4.0 or the 2.5 I'd settle for the manual, autos rock behind v8's though.

I like having an overdrive, and taking a nice scenic drive on a windy country road on a beautiful spring/summer/fall/winter day just makes a 5 speed worth it. Plus, in my opinion, a 5 speed has better acceleration, especially as you get into larger tire size. The tranny doesnt bog down as much with proper gearing.

I always like to address the issue that most 5-speeders try to mimic an auto for off-road while keeping the fun and driveablilty of a stick. One way to do this is lower gearing. With an overdrive, you can get away with much lower diff gearing, for better acceleration as well as control, plus you can maintain good highway rpms, not too high or too low. Next is intalling a 4to1 low kit in the tcase. Again, it is all about the lowest crawl ratio. Ideally, with a 4to1 and low diff gears, a stick driver can let off the clutch and the jeep will move, without applying gas. Thus you are looking at two pedals if you are in a scary situation, now add in the hand throttle and you are as close to an automatic as you can get. So there you are, mimicking an automatic with low diff gears, low tcase gearing and a hand throttle to supply gas, then you pull off the trail and head home, having fun driving your stick.

It's personal preference. Manual/auto...RE/Skyjacker.....4cyl/6cyl....lock the front first/lock the rear first.......

Btw....manual are better on declines, autos are better on incline.

is there a difference in the cost of the manual vs. automatic parts for the tranny?

I have the auto and get up to 70mph everyday on my way to work. RPM's are only about 2600 at 70mph. It's probably not too smart, with my lift and 32's, to go much faster but I definitely can if needed. I love my auto, it came with 3.55 gears and is perfect for 32's.

Yeah, but your jeep came stock with those gears and 215s or 225s, like a 27-28" tire, which would have put you at or over 3000 rpms which is high for a stocker. I have a friend with 6 cyl, 4.10s, auto and 35s and he is pulling near 3000 at 65/70 mph. You made a good choice on tire size versus gear ratio and tranny gearing. Nothing wrong with going 70 with an auto, just be careful that your gearing isnt too low for tire size so that you are running high revs all the time. 32's and 3.55s is a very nice match. It seems like a lot of auto guys like 4.56 gears with 33s which I would think would run waaay high rpms.
