Icon315 Scout 44 swap question

I just picked up a set of dana 44s out of a scout and am going to install them in a 93 YJ. What issues can I expect to have to deal with. I'm also looking for the front flat top knuckles so I can install high steering, if anyone has or knows where to pick up a set. I'm also looking for 4.88 gears for them as well.

First thing that comes to my mind is what transfer case are you going to use? You do realize that the diff is on the passenger side on the Scout axles, and on the drivers side in the YJ? A Dana 300 works well, I understand... or an Atlas.

Look here for info. I found these links while researching my own Dana 44 swap. We used Grand Wagoneer axles.

Good luck with your swap.

I put a scout II in the rear of my 93. YJ. I do not remember having any problems. Just be sure to center it. I used my original e-brake cables from my dana 35. ( just strech the spring out). Feel free to hit me up if ya need any help.

If you use the scoutII front axle you may need to turn the knuckles. The scoutII rear will work great but you may want to keep it simple and find a waggoneer front 44.

definatly think about turning the knuckles, its fairly easy if you have a welder.

If you want to run the scout axles....

Dana 300 transfer case
cut and turn inner knuckles for caster/pinion angle
find a mid 70's full size jeep or chevy for flat top knuckles
might consider switching the breaks to ford stuff scout parts cost
an arm and a leg around here.

thats the big stuff I can think of

Agreed. I would go disk break in the rear, Much cheaper in the long run then running the drums.

I have not seen much about converting a rear scout 44 to disc. Do you know what likely donor vehicles are? Any references or websites to someone who's done it?

good ole stu- offroad. But the brackets he talks about can now be bought at jeep. Right off of the rubicon rear. Or you can probably get the rubicon rear brakes.

Read the write-ups related to my project Jeep:

http://www.bc4x4.com/pv/yj/yj.cfm

I'd definitely cut/turn the knuckles.

You can use Ford parts with the Scout brakes. For instance, I'm running Ford calipers (1976-79 Ford F-150 4x4 V8) with my Scout rotors and brackets.

For high steer, I pulled a couple of flat top knuckles off an old IH fullsize pickup. They have the same 8-bolt spindles as the Scout D44 so all Scout stuff was re-usable. They're harder to find, of course. Your next option is to find Jeep or GM flat top knuckles and spindles, and mix and match with Ford hubs. You need the correct GM spindles (I think u need the small bearing units) to fit the Ford hubs. Outer shafts can be Ford or GM if you're using Warn Premium hubs.

Jeep and GM use 6 bolt spindles. 76' and older GM spindles use the smaller bearings that will take the F150/Bronco hubs/rotors. Earlier FSJ (79' and older?) used 5 lug pattern, but not sure if the spindles are the large or small bearing.
