I too am a fan of low COG.
I trimmed my fenders for TJ flares, added a 1" BL and run 33-10.50 BFG MT's (stock springs). I run disco'd with no trackbars and can just barely rub when completely flexed. If all you do is trim for TJ flares, you could probably run 32's with minimal rubbing MP

Damn, that looks sweet!!
I'm just guessing, but you could probably fit 33's. Maybe bigger. MP

Stock with a bit of trimming 31s will probably still rub under flex a bit. 33 will rub a lot.
If you want just add a 1-1.5 inch BL and leave the suspension stock. What do you wanna do with it...off road? If so you'll be rubbin and scrapin everything. |

freeqgOd,
Did you just bolt on the TJ flares or did you trim your fenders to mount them as high as possible? Where do you rub? How wide are your tires? Whats your rim offset? All Jeeps and setups are unique, but here is my experience. Totaly stock with sway bars disco'd - Ramped my Jeep to stuff my tires as far as possible, axle pressed into bump stop. Measured ~15" from center of hub to point in fender where tire would contact. 15" would be my max tire radius or 30" diam. Bought 30x9.5 BFG AT's and ran it like that for several years. Wanted bigger tires so I decided I needed to increase my radius. Cut ~1" of fender and installed TJ flares. Now measured ~16", could fit 32's. Skipped the 32's cause I wanted 33's. Did a 1" BL. Now measure ~17" radius. Installed 33-10.50 BFG MTs on my stock 15x7 rims. I can get a slight rub while turning on pretty extreme trails (definately not tearing off chuncks of rubber). If a BL and trimming were all that I did, I would have a pretty weak trail rig. I have done quite a bit of mods to allow front and rear revolvers to open all the way up (extended shock towers F+R, long travel shocks, extended brake lines, modified e-brake cables, track bars gone, sway bar disco'd). Works for me. Everybody expects and does different things with their Jeep so my experiences may not be relevent to their situation. MP

I have 32x 11.50 mounted the tj flares very high I trimmed a lot out but I am waiting on a lift and I got a good deal on some used 32's I have revolvers in front but I keep everything connected right now so they are useless I havent gone wheeling much lately because I rub soooo bad. my bump stops are small and crappy but this is the only thing that could be stopping yours. I hear of guys running the bds 3.5 with 1" bl and tj flares with 33's and still rubbing I just don't see how you don't rub

Ive got the original stops so I doubt thats the dif.
Where do you rub? Outer edges of flares when you hit a bump at speed, or the inside of fender (where the flare mounts) when flexed? I've got narrower tires than you 10.50's, so I dont even come close to my flares. I cant get my tires to rub on this ramp. Only off road when things are getting hairy. Maybe its a Canadian thing (yea I got one of those Canadian Jeeps). MP

Here is an 89 YJ, with newly installed 31x10.5's.
If you have enough offset (less backspacing) on your wheels, you dont rub at full turn. These wheels are 3.25" in the pics. However, If I hit a speed bump, or hit my brakes firmly, it sends my tires into my flares. I have no problem driving like this, but I sure am not going to offroad it until I get a lift on. http://www.advantexcom.net/~quino/jeep2/ If I disconnected, I would smash my front fenders all to hell. Of course, these springs are saggy as well. |

I just re-read this thread, and I think were talking about different types of rubbng.
Tires can rub several different ways: Turning to your stearing stops - tire rubs on springs Hard breaking or speed bumps - tire rubs flare Axle articulation - tire rubs inside of fender When I said I didnt have bad rubbing, that wasnt totally true. When I first installed these tires I rubbed bad on the spring when turned to locks. Bad enough that I would have torn chunks off my tires. I could have bought rims with different back spacing (moved tires out) to fix the problem, but that probably would have caused flare rubbing. I added washers behind my stops to end the rubbing (turning radius suffers now). I think the rubbing problem alot of people have is caused by running too wide a tire and using the wrong backspacing. This will make you rub your flares. Now, the only way I rub is when very flexed and turning I rub inside of the fender (slightly). MP

I had 31's and no lift. check out my website. the front tires rubbed the flares 1/4" and the rear flares 1/2". I trimmed the flares so you couldn't see where they rubber. Since then I put on 1" body lift and TJ flares. I had aftermarket rims so they're spaced out a bit more than stock.
