Icon312 01 TJ wont start, need help

I went out to my jeep this afternoon to go to the store and turned it over and it would not crank. Fuel gauge read empty so I put 5 gallons of gas in it, tried again, only starter turns again. I take a look at the gauges again and notice the volt gauge isnt registering either?!?!?! I am going to try to go outside and unplug the battery but I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has had this experience... Thanks

Not sure, but if the Jeep actually ran out of gas, doesn't the pump need to be reset ???

Anyone?

I dont think the jeep ran out of gas, I just put gas in it because the gauge was reading empty, after I put gas in it, the gauge still read empty, along with every other gauge, nothing moves

Good morning Riidel,

The symptoms you are describing make the problem sound as if the circuit to the Automatic Shutdown Relay in your Jeep is not working.

Check two things.

1.
Behind the glove box there is a fuse box. Make sure the ASD Relay Fuse is good. It is probably Fuse 11, or Fuse 10.

2.
If the fuse is good go under the hood and take the top off the Power Distribution Center.

You will find four relays (or relay slots) in a row running from left to right. One of them in the Auto shutdown relay, another Exactly the same, is the Horn relay.

Look at the bottom of the Power Distribution Center Cover and it will tell you which is which.

Swap out the ASD Relay with the Horn Relay.

Perhaps this will help.

Frank

Battery is not dead, as the starter turns the engine over normally, I checked the fuses, everything is good there, and the relays didnt help either....I called the dealer after trying all of this and told them to come get it and fix it, I still got another 1500 miles on the warrenty, why not use it I guess. They mentioned something about a bad fuel pump or fried computer?!?! This problem had me totally stumped, only thing that sucks now is that i have to wait on the slow service.. thanks for your help and replies.. Riidel

Those would have been my first guesses, not that I know anything about anything. I had similar symptoms when my ECM plug was destroyed and partially re-constructed, so it could be any number of wiring issues.

Let us know what they find! I have an 01, too...

Got the Jeep back today, they had to replace the fuel pump and that cured the problem.
