Default This is kinda long but if someone has time I'd appreciate it!

I took my 95 cherokee sport with 70,000 miles to the dealer (yeah I know)to have a new head gasket put in.
They called and said:

1. The exhaust manifold was cracked.
A. They said it would cost $675 just for parts.
2. It needs new Transmission cooler lines.
A. $75 Just for parts.
3. A Front pinion seal.
4. An oil pan Gasket.

I'm just trying to find out if this stuff is a regular occurance for a 95 w/70,000 miles or not. Do those parts prices sound right for 1 and 2 and what would the parts price be for 3 and or 4?

They told me that, to get to the head gasket they would not need to remove the exhaust manifold but when they called to tell me the exhaust manifold was cracked they said they did remove it to get to the head gasket. It's not necessary to remove the Exhaust Manifold to change a head gasket is this correct?

If I forgot any details you may need just let me know.

I'd appreciate any help you guys could give. Thank you for your time!

Default head gasket

the exhaust manifold does need to be pulled to do the head gasket, and as far as the prices for the parts, not to surprising to me considering they are new parts from the dealer and all. As for the tranny line and stuff, well CAn't help you much there, mine been leaking for a longtime and I just keep an I on the fluid level and all that, I replace tehm eventually. Oil pan gasket, you can do your self in a day, 35 buck for a one piece gasket and some oil and filter for when you done. Never done Pinion seal on the Cherokee but If I rember right When I did one one my truck it was about 20 or so bucks for the gasket and I did the work my self. Hope this helps a little.

The exhaust manifold is known to crack. You could buy a aftermarket header for half the price though and get alittle more performance. I would not buy a factory manifold for that price. For about $350ish you can get a Borla header and never have to worry about it ever cracking again. I had a Borla header on my old 89. I paied alittle over $300 for it. I had the header on for about 2 years. After I killed the engine I was still able to sell the Borla header for $200.

If there pulling the oil pan might as well have a new rear main seal installed. There a 2 peice design and you need to remove the oil pan to get to it. Part cost about $15 from the dealer.

As for the manifold, get a header for $250 it's cheaper and you'll gain some power from it. Or you can re-weld the manifold.

1) Exhaust Manifold-Check a junk yard, buy a header or see if there's a recall.
2)Transmission cooler lines- Go to parts store and make your own. Save lots of $$
3)Front Pinion Seal- If they're talking about the front crankshaft oil seal, have them replace it with the head gasket.
4) Oil Pan Gasket- Buy at the parts store and install

Go to your local muffler shop and they can weld your exhaust manifold for less than $150 total.

I have a 1995 with around 80K on it, and have had the rear main seal done, and the exhaust manifold.

for 150.00 you can go buy your own welder and do it yourself.

Ummm, not if you dont have the skills, time etc etc. I would love to be able to do all my own repairs, but I have a fulltime job, class and there arent 30 hours in a day for me to be able to work on my Jeep at leisure. If I want it done right, and I know I dont have the time/skills, I take it to someone. Pretty simple concept.

Save some money and hire another jeeper to do the work - We all can use more mod money.

Join a local jeep club. Many fellow jeepers would do the work for parts plus a little extra for mod money.

I know a few jeepers who helped rebuild another guys I6 from yank to crank for some pizza and beer.

Go get some other quotes, Dealers charge $80+ per hour, mechanic shops generally $35 - $45 an hour, My mechanic of 15 years charges (discounted) $25hr & Shadetree's generally charge $15

My point was that 150.00 to weld the header was outrageous unless they removed the manifold

No need to take it as a hit on you.

Smile OK...........LETS PLAY BASH THE DEALER

.
Ok folks, fresh from the east coast of North Carolina, here are the actual list prices for the parts mentioned:

head gasket set.....................................64.35
exhaust manifold..................................565.00
trans line--return....................................43.35
trans line--supply....................................36.50
oil pan gasket.........................................39. 60
front seal.............................................. ....5.60
------------
.$754.40

Now this is without a matrix price format figured in. A matrix figured in could boost the list price on this total upwards of 250.00.

Ya'll have a nice day.

Bill

definately get a header replacement and not have the stock one welded up!..it will only last temporarily and will crack again.the banks header is the overwhelming favorite now on some of the other boards as the Borla's have had cracking issues lately as well.Good luck
