Default Running straight pipe

Hey I was just wondering if there were any drawbacks to running a straight pipe without a muffler? Like gas mileage drop or power loss? Thanks

"Great solution: buy a cut-out. Anywhere in the exhaust you put a Y shaped pipe in, with a escape pipe. You can run your normal exhaust, or open the valve and have open pipes. Or you can open it half/quarter, for the sound/back pressure you want. Most have to be unscrewed from under the truck, but you can get cable operated, and electronic.

It's perfect, no one wants loud exhaust all the time, taking your gf out to dinner, or coming home late, it sucks. But when you're at a light with a buddy, you show him what is up with two words, straight pipes.

For searching online, they are also called Dump Pipes."

i ran no pipe from the cat back and it was definately loud as hell and most people dont really care, but i loved it and so did the chicks...so the hell with every one else...i talked to a exhaust shop and they said that i would be fine as long as i still had the cat on there for back pressure reasons and other exhaust lingo....i noticed a drop in gas mileage, but who cares it sounded pretty cool....if you don't wanna do that just put a cherry bomb on it....later, eric

Ya I bought a flowmaster 40 series delta flow and I'm getting it welded tonight but I took it off and drove the jeep around and I liked it without the muffler because the muffler doesn't sound too much louder than stock. Thanks

theoretically you should be getting better gas milage, cause it breathes easier....

but most of us will wamp on it more just to hear it... so their goes the gas mileage....

you should get better top end... and better top end fuel econmy...

loss of low rpm torque is suspected, but if its a V motor, putting in an H pipe, or an X pipe will fix this to some extent...

and yes, louder it is...

I ran mine with no cat and a flowmaster 40 series and did notice some top end gain, but the sound got annoying as hell and i got horrible gas mileage. Now that ive put a cat back on, its way quiter and doesnt seem to use nearly as much gas.

I still have my cat on. I just took off the muffler and connected a pipe. Will my gas mileage decrease or what?

Im running a straight pipe into a glasspack, not horribly loud, no drone on the highway. And it sounds oh so good. After I cut my cat off I started it up...it sounds good but way to loud. Its perfect with the pipe and pack now though.

I did notice a loss of low end torque, but I can still chirp 33x12.50 A/Ts with stock gearing. Top end is much, much better now. Your results may differ.

Hey fryphax, is it one of those cherry bomb glasspacks. I have found many around here that are like 25 bucks and i'm thinking of that. Do you have your cat on right now with the glasspack? What about your gas mileage? Thanks

opinions i got were "very gay" and "it would sound like a wet fart"

although i had a thought, what if you had the cutout go to a second exhaust pipe running a flowmaster 30. this way you could turn on and off the flowmaster sound, and with a little work on the tips it would look like a normal dual exhast setup

Yup just a standard glasspack, some call them cherry bombs. Same thing really. I have a 2" glasspack with the ends expanded to 2 1/4 No cat, it was bad and rattled to I just put in a straight pipe. My gas milage stayed the same, but I also put on 33s when I put the pipe on. Plus Im a bit more aggresive just to hear my 4.0 Breathe
