Question Replacement steering box for TJ, which one?

I heard that you could replace the stock steering box in a '97 TJ with a beefier one from a grand wagoneer. Supposedly it matched right up. Any one done it before?
If so, what year did you get it out of and what kind of problems did you run into?

I have heard that the steering box out of a J20 is a good setup, but I don't have any first-hand experience.

What have other TJ owners done to upgrade their steering on the cheep?

BTT for ya!

I have replaced my TJ steering box with one out of a Wagoneer.
Working good so far. And it's a direct bolt in.
NAPA part # is:27-7570

Be warned it is about the same cost as an AGR box.
And it does cost more than the TJ box.
There must be some good reason why.

an 80+ steering box out of a Grand Wagoneer will work in a TJ and is a direct bolt up. It will have 4 mounting points vs. 3 on the TJ. if I remember the ratio is a little better also. you can buy it new and get a warranty and pay about 160 or so plus core or 50 to 75 from a junk yard.

IIRC.....

J20 boxes > J10/Wagoneer/YJ boxes > TJ boxes

I've got a J20 box in the Durango. Had one mount (it's a 4 bolt box) ground off and use the remaining 3 (same 3 bolt pattern as a TJ).

J20 box has been in there for 2+ years... nearly 40K miles... on a 5640 lb rig, riding on 35s with a locked front, that get's wheeled hard on high traction rocks regularly... Not so much as an adjustment yet. Drives like brand new rack and pinion on the freeway to this day.

How's that ??

Yeah, i got 2 from a friend and junkyard.
I will just flush the fluid out of Waggy and install it then fill fluid up thats it.
I havent install it due to cold outside.
Its suppose be a bit stronger, better ratio.
I was told that Wagoneer and AGR are ALMOST ID to each other but need more reseach on that anyway!

If you want from Wagoneer then to looking for 80+.

HTH!

I don't know that it's all junk, just the 4 set-ups I have been involved with.

I am glad to finally have returned that crap back to it's rightful owner (AGR) and get it out of my garage.

I had read at one time that AGR went away from the bronze lower bushing to support the sector shaft and replaced it with a caged needle bearing. I still have not been able to verify this. The bronze bushing on my last one is what pushed me over the edge when it cratered after a couple of trips to JV.
