Icon5a i know why Mork was upside-down in the CJ

he was either:

A. replacing speakers
or
B. trying to get the 4 nuts off the speedo cluster

i did both this morning, and is it a PITA for a 5'18" feller to get in there to do that. the speaker was cake, but the speedo cluster helped me invent a few choice words. took me more than long enough to remove the top 2 nuts on the "cluster". and before you mention it...i thought about removing my dash all together, so getting behind it would be easier. tried to remove my dash pad, and realized there's probably more holding it on than the 4 screws on the bottom (meaning i need to prop up the hardtop, fold the windshield down...blah blah blah).

anyway, am i the only idiot who wanted to have a working fuel/temp gauge? i think my old "fill up every 250 miles" worked just fine.

i guess my break's over. one beer down, many more to come. hopefully everything will go back in just fine.

What year/model was her CJ anyway? I've wondered that for years.

LOL... I mean, what a bummer. Yeah, the best way to get to all that stuff is to take the dash apart. For that, you would in fact have to fold down the windshield to get to the rest of the screws holding the dash pad in place. Sounds like yer having fun though

Someone actually has an intact dash pad?!?

Wow. Dash pads, working fuel gauges. Is this a sign of the impending apocalypse?

Hey - don't knock it til ya try it.

My buddy gave me his 'junk' dash pad that has only 2 tiny star-shaped cracks in it, but you won't find them in a hurry. Fuel gauge still works... hopefully, it'll take longer to go to the 'E' mark since I swapped in an MC2100 today.

Hey Mister 4x4, if the cracks are small like you say, Permatex sells a good vinyl repair kit that'll patch em right up. The kit comes with everything you need including an iron.

Hah! Every 250 miles? Lucky you

With my 360 it's more like every 120 miles.

my 1/4" drive socket fit in there nicely on mine. I can have the cluster out in about 15 minutes.

as for dash pads, if anyone is looking for one, I'm gonna be pulling mine out in the next month. If anyone is interested, speak now or bid on it on Ebay later

When you re-install the cluster, just leave the upper drivers side nut off. You only need 3 to hold it all together. I know, you want 4 holding it on, but man, that last nut is a pita.

actually, for me, the passenger upper nut was the PITA. i got the drivers side on no problem. anyway, i can recommend for anyone taking out stock gauges, and putting them back in--invest in a few of the little 5/8" light sockets (a couple bucks each) for the bulb sockets. i found out the hard way that you must be very gentle with them, or you break off the little metal ears that hold them all together. trying to get the old ones to work isn't worth it, but crimp some new ones onto the leads, and you're good to go.

and yes, my dash pad is in pristine condition! HA! the PO of my CJ babied it, garage-kept, only driven on weekends...

anyway, i make sure to put some of that 303 on it every once in a while, to keep it from rotting away in the dry colorado climate.

Forget the nuts, I used small pieces of rubber vac hose. Held tight for 4 years now. And when you stand your Jeep on her nose and put your foot on the dash. The speedo will give instead of busting (don't ask).
