I was looking at the WJs on the local Jeep lot and noticed that some dealers order all Selec Tracs on their Grands rather than the Quadra Trac II or the optional Quadradrive systems.....I wondered why, and as the local dealer seems to usually not be able to "talk Jeep" very well I thought I'd ask you guys- afterall, you Jeepers are the real experts! What are the advantages/disadvantages to the different systems? Thanks in advance for any info!!!

I am pretty sure that both Quadra drive and Quadra trac II has no 2wd option. In my opinion that is definitely a plus to have.
Does anybody know if it is possible to find a limited with selec-trac?

The quadradrive model will come with a 247 transfer case that has 4 all time and 4 low (w/ center diff lock).
The select-trac model will come with a 242 transfer case that has 4 all time, 4 part time (w/ctr dif lok), 4 low (w/ctr dif lok), & 2 wheel drive. The quadradrive option will also give you traction devices in both front and rear axles (hydra-loks). I've heard various rumors on what type of axle options you can order with selec-trac (hydra-lok, trash-lok, open, etc), but I'm not sure (anyone?). From what I've heard and seen, most "typical" WJ owners get the most satisfaction from Quadradrive. It a great 4wd system for an average user and is very user friendly. I decided to swap in a selec-trac case to give me more shifting options and availability of aftermarket parts for lifted WJ's (ie. SYE kit). It's really a matter of preference. |

Thanks for the info so far......the local dealer has 2 Grands with selec trac.... I am trying to decide whether to go with one of those or to wait for a Quadradrive (which means a dealer trade or a special order.)

Personally, I'd go with QD. Since '99 MOST of the bugs have been worked out. No need for lockers etc. And you'll have the most advanced jeep available. Throw a mid level 4" lift on it and there will be no where you won't be able to go.. in comfort.
Good luck, Mike.

For the most part Limiteds and V8 Laredos will be with 247 T/C. A lot of I6 with SelecTrac. At least that's what I have seen. According to Chrysler 02 Limited is only available w/247 case, 242 not even a build-me-a-jeep option (which kinda sucks). Frankly I think the 242 is a better case for wheeling but that's just me.

quadradrive is only available on the limiteds and the overland, it is no longer available for the laredos, but you can get the rear varilok diff in the laredos with the selec trac.

I ordered my '02 in January and would've gotten QD on my V8 Laredo but it (I think) was only available on the Limiteds and Overlands. Instead I opted for the 242 Selec-Trac and like the flexibility - also had the vari-lok rear as an option. So I have 3 drive wheels - now a question:
Has anyone put another vari-lok in the front axle of a Selec-Trac equipped Jeep? Any reasons why you couldn't?

I just bought my own WJ just a couple months ago, so the Quadra-Trac/Selec-Trac choice is still pretty fresh in my mind.
I think the issue really boils down to control & flexibility versus simplicity. All arguments about the merits of each system and every user's opinion can fit into one of those two categories. I ended up choosing the Selec-Trac because I like having the options. Cruising down the pavement, I'm in 2WD. Muddy conditions, and it's in 4PT. Driving down wintery Minnesota roads, and I'm in 4FT, with the open center diff. Doing some hill climbs or descents, and I'm invoking 4LO. I'm in control of my vehicle, and it connects me to the machine the same way a manual transmission does, and I love it. My previous ZJ had the 1st generation Quadra-Trac on it. It was admittedly nice to just "set it and forget it" and just drive. I pointed the vehicle just about anywhere I wanted to go. Occasionally, yanking a stuck tractor out of a bog or deep snow required the torque from 4LO. QTII with QD is quite possibly the world's most advanced 4WD system (but "advanced" does not necessarily mean "best"). It may, in some ways, be more capable than Selec-Trac by virtue of responding quicker to changing road conditions. Its ability as a stock vehicle to be propelled by a single wheel with traction is, in a word, cool. That's something that requires some form of lockers with other 4WD systems. The reason your Jeep dealership has a bunch of Selec-Trac-equipped WJ's on the lot is because they typically pair the 4.0L I6 with the Selec-Trac, and (based on my own observations of WJ's in the Twin Cities) the I6 is a much more popular engine. I managed to find a nice 4.7L with the Selec-Trac and couldn't be happier. (Well, I'd be happier with the H.O. 4.7L in the Overland, but I digress.)

Shickdawg -
Sounds like we got almost the exact same rig at about the same time... '02 WJ Laredo Selectrac V8 I got the Selectrac for exactly the same reasons... A lot of mixed surface driving here in NY.

How is the durability of 247? The 249 functions good until the VC breaks down. That's the reason many swap it out.
The 247 does not have a VC.

As far as durability of the 247, I think it's too early to tell still. |

QuadraDrive is the most misunderstood 4wd system on the planet. A quick search will turn up TONS of info on this subject. Here's a few to get you going...
Atten WJ'ers, Selec-trac or Q-drive?? Buying soon. Q-drive vs. Q-trac vs. S-trac. Advice needed. Quadra-Drive or Select-Trac ? // Up-Country or Not ? Might buy a '01 WJ, advice needed from you WJ owners... |

I see - so not as simple as throwing the gear in and going with it... well that answers my question.

Hey Schickdog, Do you get an increase in gas mileage using the 2WD mode?

Thanks for all the info! I am really wanting to get a Grand...(and as JayF pointed out I've been confused on the 4WD systems for ages
) I have 3 dealerships pretty nearby- the one I normally dal with has nothing I want, the next closest one has a black Limited with selec trac, and the other one has a patriot blue with the V8 & the package that includes Quadradrive...it also has the chrome wheels, which look great on the blue exterior- decisions, decisions! Again thanks for the input!
