I am currently in the process of ordering a set of 15x8 AR "Tailgunner" chrome wheels for my '98 Wrangler. I want to include the rear spare as well. This is a steel wheel that obviously is heavier than the current OEM alloy wheel mounted on the rear. The tires are 31-10:50's.
Will the tailgate and mounting bracket handle this extra weight ?? Has anybody done something similar ?? Reading some of the other threads here make me think I might have troubles back there. I could use some advice. Thanks, Rick

I have a 33 x 12.50 on mine. (I know, I know, it doesn't match the 35's on my jeep but.... oh well!!!) It has only been on there for about a month, I could immediately tell a difference when I open my gate. There is a slight "catch" now.
I will leave it for a little while but eventually I will have to get a swing out carrier. I would suggest the same to you. Just my $.02

You should be fine. Consider there's only 5-8 lb difference b/w aluminum wheels & steel ones; then consider how little weight difference there is b/w 30" tires (that are available stock) and 31s.
Over 31", I'd be looking to build or buy a swing-out of some sort.
