Icon924 242 Grinding in 2wd ????

89 XJ , 242 t-case .

> Grinding noise in 2wd. Set on jack stands and noise is from the t-case .
> Fluid is clean with no metal or contaminants .
> Even not running and just spinning a front wheel it turns the t-case via the driveline and makes the noise at the t-case .
> Is this the chain rubbing the inner case or are the 242's known for bearing failures ?
> Checked the linkage & even manually ran it through it's range of motion with no change .

> Any idea's would be greatly appreciated . Thanks ....

Default

id say bearings
they arent prone to bearing falure, but bearings do go bad if you drop the front shaft and spin the front output do you hear/feel anything?

> I pulled the t-case and drivelines , front output feels very smooth and theres no sign of the chain contacting the cases .
> The planetary assembly nearest the rear driveline is pretty noisy , even just spinning it by hand .
> No signs of gear wear or damage .
> Could it be that there is enough wear at 200,000 miles that lash between them is excessive and there go the noise ???

>> Thanks again for any ideas <<
