Thread: WJ makes weird whine shortly after startup

Default WJ makes weird whine shortly after startup

I'll turn it on and let it idle for a couple minutes when I get ready to go to work, and usually when I start backing up (unless I let it idle for awhile) it'll start making a progressively louder vvvvvvvVVVVVV noise till it goes away. What could this be?

Crawl under your car and see if it is coming from your starter.

A possible cause of such noise would be the starter failing to disengage from the flywheel.

As Billy said, without more it is hard to diagnose. It could be a lot of things.

I'll try to get a video, it's not everytime and it isn't the loudest thing in the world. It sounds like it's coming from the rear.

This sounds a lot like my issues. Check out these videos I made. Similar stuff?

Upon initial startup, your transmission will be in a cold mode status, trying to warm the transmission fluid up to operating temp. It could be the pump cavitating a little bit with soiled fluid or one of the transmission filters clogging up. I see/hear it a lot in the (5)45-RFE transmissions.

I just passed 90k mi and am due for a trans flush anyway. I'll see if my mechanic can get me in tomorrow. It doesn't sound like your Jeep chainrule because it starts out semi quiet, goes for 7-10 sec as it gets louder, then is gone.

Did you get the trans flush, and did it solve the problem? I'm having the same thing happen.
