Thread: 79 CJ7 wiper problems?

    Default 79 CJ7 wiper problems?

I am trying to get my wipers fixed before I go camping next week. I ordered a new switch. Plugged it in and got nothing. The old switch would work every once in a while. This new one does't at all.

i used a test light and I am getting power out to all of the wires on the wiper motor.

It is a 3 wire wiper motor. I tried finding a diagram for it, but haven't had luck as of yet. Any help would be great.

I just tested the switch. It changes voltage to each pin as you turn the switch.

I tried running a ground wire to the motor this time. Wipers will run on hi and low speed when I do this. However, when I put it in the Park/Stop position it continues to go.

Does this mean I need a wiper motor?

You may have one of the bad wiper motors. Some were produced with two of the wires reversed.

When you turn on your Jeep - Does it return the favor?

I read that, but I still have the original wiper motor in the Jeep. The switch was replaced but not the motor.

Anyone know how to check the wiper motor?

Are you sure it's grounded? The motor grounds through a tab where it mounts to the windshield. If you have a bad ground it will work intermittently like you described.

I put an extra ground on it. It will work in high and low speed. In park position it does not stop but it goes slower than the low speed setting. I will only shut off fully if I disconnect the ground.

A little off topic, but my 85 CJ-7 wipers park on the driver's side.....

That's not normal, is it? I've checked it twice and everything is right as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I don't get it....I wonder why mine park on the driver's side? It's kind of annoying because as we all know, CJ wipers don't lay flat when they are parked. With mine parked on the driver's side, they are in my field of view while driving.

When my 79 was new I had problems with the wiper, took it back to the dealer and they fixed something on the motor. My finally stopped parking when I turned the switch off so when they are off to one side I turn the switch off then.

I don't know what they did, but I think he did a little soldering on a circut board on the motor. He didn't do much and didn't take very long.

Mine park when I shut them off, they just park on the driver's side. I've seen some foreign CJ's that do the same thing. Maybe I got one of their motors or something.
