No rattle here, other than the "normal" diesel noises. We have almost 12,000 miles on ours with no problems. Describe the rattle please... what causes it and what's the fix?

    Thanks.

    WH vehicle 3.0L Diesel

    Works just fine until 700Km.

    Then the engine rattle starts.
It starts when cold engine first and at 1200Km. does it all the time cold or warm.

Oil change at 1250Km. with better chrysler mopar oils. It keeps rattling.
Suggestion from the Greek Jeep Technical Headquarters to use of Mobil1 ultra thin oil and that they have solved this issue , but mine keeps rattling.

Now the vehicle at the dealership with no answers from the factory.

The problem is with one chain tensioner which is hydraulic operated.
Some mechanics say that mercedes has fixed the problem and dont give the answer to Jeep.

Jeep has announced no TSB so far.

It is not a normal diesel noise, and the engine works fine with huge amounts of torque, but it rattles like when the valvles are rattling when reving from 2K rpm and up . In town it is very embrarassing to drive by and sound like it broken.even if this doesnt hurt the engine.

I heard one solution apart from the oil change.
And I would like to know what kind of oil do u use.

    Thanks,

    Lefteris

That kind of rattle is not connected with oil. Most probably problem is with timing chain and chain tensioner. If tensioner is loose or it does not work properly then chain will touch the engine block and that is producing rattling sound. Solution is to clean/change the tensioner. Which oil to use - that is your preference as long as specification is according manual. Me personally, Mobil 1 or BP Visco 5000.

Yes friend from austria, it is connected to oil in case of hydraulic tensioner.

The hydraulic tensioner's tension is relative to the oil pressure.
Thats why the remmedy with the lower viscosity oils that raise the oil pressure.

The oil is driven through a pipe to hit the tensioner.

What I have been said is that the "HOLE" is not big enough due to manufacturing mistake in casting.

Maybe all of the above are wrong but from some mechanics visited the remedy is to enlarge this "gate" after the oil pump, so there is more flow for the oil to hit the tensioner.

The bad thing is a have my brand new GC sitting at the dealership..

I would like to hear other opinions about this matter.

PS: only the 2 oil types Mobil 1 and BP Visco ) you are using where mentioned from headquarters that seem to solve the problem...

    Post your question here:

There's a very helpful Jeep mechanic from the UK on that forum that may know more about this situation.

I have what sounds like a rattle.
it started about 1500 miles, it sounds to me like under the jeep, almost like the exhaust is loose?
I need to get it looked at.
