Question Building top and doors for 79 CJ5

How hard would it be to just build a hard top and full doors for a CJ5? I've been doing alot of searching and can't seem to find a set of doors or top for a decent price in my area. I need to get a top on my newly purchased CJ5 because winters in NE Ohio are not very forgiving. Thanks in advance to all that reply.

    unrealistic....

Simply go to 4wd.com, pull out a credit card, and buy a soft top with doors.

Not unrealistic. Just need dimensions. I can make one out of fiberglass or sheet metal just need exact dimensions. I know I can just go out and buy a soft top and doors but that's alittle unrealistic since I don't have the $600+ to buy one.

Perhaps not unrealistic, but a maybe a long drive to pick one up or a few bucks on shipping would be a a lot less effort/cost/time than fabrication? CJ5 tops show up pretty regularly on eBay, there are at least 5 on there now:

I used to have CJ5 hardtop plans from plywood. It is doable, and doesn't look bad. It is very heavy Here is a good thread on the basics of Hardtop building using Styrofoam and resin the won't break the bank:

I send out a huge Thank you to both jscherb and LEVE for your help. I searched ebay and found plans on how to build a Woody Hard Top which is an awesome retro look. I also have a better insight on where to start and what material I need to build my own with the link that was posted. I am in your debt both of you.

not trying to be rude, just trying give you my opinion. you want a top before the cold comes? well times short! If you have no top then soft tops can be found for good prices on Ebay. I just sold a black Bestop soft top for a CJ5 on ebay about two weeks ago for $200. (250 after shipping). You can get soft doors for under $100. Sure a new top is more money, but you will be happier with the fit and finish.

    Your choice.... good luck.

You didn't come off rude. I value your opinion. Yes there are a couple of tops available on ebay. I did find some dimensions. The distance of the windshield width measures 55" and from factory door hinges to the rear of vehicle measures 71 1/2". So now I need to measure the distance from the top of the cab rail to the top of the roll bar. I know I should've done it already but it was late. I'll keep everyone posted. Also on another note might be able to fit an '82 Blazer cap to it. Not sure at the moment buddy of mine has one laying behind his garage going over later today to get some measurements.

Did you ever end making a top for your Heep?

I know this thread is OLD, but curious if you did, and/or how it turned out!
