    Default Bad Pilot Bearing - what happens?

    If you have a bad pilot bearing, what are the symptoms?

    I replaced the clutch about 2 years ago when my throwout bearing went bad. I went ahead and got the clutch kit from the Jeep dealership (pressure plate and clutch disc) but I cannot remember if I replaced the pilot bearing. I had 4 guys helping me so I just don't remember if it got done or not. I do know the kit didn't come with an alignment tool and luckily I know a guy at PepBoys that let me use one out of their clutch kits. So, I'm starting to think maybe I didn't replace the pilot bearing.

    I'm getting a little vibration when I first push the clutch in at around 50 mph. It lasts about a second or two and goes away. All my driveline ujoints are in great shape and nearly brand new... no real slop anywhere else I can find. So, I gotta think its in the clutch.

    So, knowing what I've replaced under routine maintenance and what not, only thing I can think of is the durn pilot bearing. I'm going to kick myself if I didn't replace the damn thing while I was in there.

    Well its supposed to hold the front of the main input shaft. When I had mine done....and they forgot to replace it....like I told them to, the Jeep would just shudder a bit on take off.
    Once it was going there wasn't much noticable....at first. Then under power you can feel it get worse as time goes on.
    I figured my problem out after a month and took it back. I tried arguing that they don't go bad that fast and the idiots tried to tell me that they did. I told them that I KNEW they didn't change it, but I ended up getting stuck for it anyway.

    A pilot bearing/bushing will not cause ANY problems when "under power" (with the clutch released).

    If it's a dry pilot bushing, when the clutch is depressed, you will hear a chirping/squealing sound (since the flywheel is turning, but the input shaft of the transmission isn't, or shouldn't be),

    Eventually if the bearing or bushing seizes, the thing will "grind" when you try to engage reverse, and will be hard to get into any synchronized gear (the synchros are working hard to stop the input shaft).

    Eventually, the input shaft will gall, and it will be hard as Hell to separate the transmission from the engine.

    I/ve bean down this road a few times,once with my race truck that ate them every 200 miles.The symptom to look for is shuddering everytime you go to let the clutch out.The more power you give it the worse it will shudder.

    Did you grease the pilot bearing when you did the clutch job? If so it really should be fine.. If not then more then likely you need a new one.. To remove use the good old hydraulic method.. Load it with grease then pound in a good fitted bolt with the threads cut off in it it will force out the old bearing with ease.. George

    What George said X2, and a wood dowel will work as well-just make sue its a barely-slip-fit through the bushing.

    Absolutely FILL the cavity inside the crankshaft with grease. Any air in there will defeat the operation. Then beat the end of the bolt/dowel w/ a hammer and the pilot bushing will pop out like magic.
