Icon316 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Speed Sensor Location

Does anyone know where the best (interior) spot is to locate the speed sensor on a 97 ZJ :bQ: I am trying to install a navigation unit and it requires that it is connected to the vehicle speed sensor. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Speed Sensor on a straight cherokee is located on the speedometer gear at the tranfer case. It is in effect the speedo gear housing. I would imagine that the setup for a grand is the same but that's just a guess. You can't move it.

ZJ's use a gear driven mechanism off the t-case. If you're under the Jeep looking at the back of the t-case, look up and to the left slightly and you'll see a couple wires coming in to the case.

heres my Speed sensor it plugs into the transsmission on the bottom, it points towards the left of the vehicle

Leak in it was fixed easily, just a cheap o-ring. Entire sensor is $35-$50 for a 4.0 ZJ

Interior would be iffy, gotta pull the dash up and splice into the cable, Very much a PITA. would be better to tie in at the bottom, drill a hole and run the cable that way.

Thanks for all the info guys... but i read somewhere that you can tap off of the cruise control or something in that nature or at the bulkhead and i also read that you shouldnt tap off directly at the speed sensor.

Does anyone else have an idea? Thanks

Anyone else have suggestions? Im looking for an easy way to splice into the speed senosr without having to go crazy looking for the wire or drilling to go to the exterior of the truck. Thanks in advance and thanks again to those who replied previously.

I'm sure that if you walked into your local Jeep dealership, explained what you want to do, that they would have several techs standing around you to suggest the best place to do the hook-up! Beats posting every day about the problem...techs like talking about techy stuff, and they don't need to charge you for their knowledge!

You could try www.the12volt.com. They might have the info you want. Bunch of car audio installers frequent the website. Hope that helps you out.
