    Default Unlimited third row seat

Use the forum all the time for information but this is my first post. I currently own an '87 YJ and a 2000 TJ. With four kids and a girlfriend we just don't all fit in one jeep and we have been looking at an Unlimited. Is there room to add a third row seat in the rear of an Unlimited? Anyone know if this has been done.

    thanks

I don't think it "can" be done...with the Unlimited only 13" longer, I don't believe that is enough room for another row.

a third seat will never fit in an unlimited. went to the dealer the other day to check them out, it's only another 5 inches of cargo room.

and the commander is real ugly.

I don't see how you could do it, the rear cargo area is 20" x 35" wide, don't even think a kid would be comfortable back there in a sideways facing seat. Get 2 Jeeps

The Commander is too big and ugly. I still want the off road ability of the unlimited. I do have two jeeps but I don't want to drag two jeeps everytime I want to go wheeling with my family. I am just looking for a way to fit 6 in one jeep short of spending $17,000 to have it stretched.

There's actually roughly 13" more behind the rear seat. Overall, the vehicle was lengthen ~15". Rear seat moved back ~2". Leaves ~13" for extra space behind the seat. Let's get your numbers right before spewing inaccuracies.

Regarding if a third row would fit....doubt it. That would have to be a tiny person to fit in the back also....and I certainly wouldn't want to cram two people back there.

    Default Also curious...

I was also curious about the "extra" seating... but a "third row" is pretty much a long shot unless a person were going to plan a complete customization involving two complete (and smaller ) bench seats designed for "something" to sit on, comfort notwithstanding. That said, it could be done in an Unlimited and there is certainly more than "5 inches more room" than a standard.

I'd be very interested if/when someone comes out with a fold-down Montero-style seat. Just one would be just fine! At the moment, all three kids are small enough where I'm out and "about" for the day, and might be the chosen one to have to go and do a school pickup. If I've got the little guy out wheelin' with a buddy.... I've got to make it to the school, and then just a 10 minute drive to the house. But I'd rather have a third fold-down for that not-so-often purpose. I have used one seatbelt around the two older kids, and I don't need to be told about the wiseness therein. So that has ceased and desisted. My option is to be out 'n about in the big arse Suburban, but then I'm not Jeepin', eh? The wife's Liberty? 'Nuff said... The "wife's Liberty." Anyway... It would be rare and not for anybody big... But for the occasional squirt a sideways lift-seat behind the bench would be a welcome addition to MY Unlimited! And I don't need a ruler to know I have enough room, 'cuz my big-arse bins fit back there fine.... a flip-seat could fit IN one of those bins! Ix-nay the third-row, but.... :jammin:

Why are you talking about a third seat? A wrangler already seats 6. One driver, one in the passenger seat, a third an their lap, and three more in the back seat. I did it once, with an additional 300 hundred pounds of white water rafting gear(including the raft) strapped on the rear cargo carrier, while doing a river takeout. We had to take the Jeep because it was the only vehicle capable of making it out of the rain soaked, rocky and clay river valley.

Remove the backseat and put in jump seats on each side that go from the tailgate to the front seats.

If the kids are small move the rear seat forward at least the two inches Jeep moved it back if not an inch or two more than it sounds like there is plenty of room for a couple of sideways jump seats in the back, I'd go for it. Or I like the idea of removing the rear seat and putting two seats sideways. Get a couple of rear seats out of the old military Jeeps, they are easy to mount, have great storage underneath and two would mount sideways, just offset a little for minimal knee bumping.

I suggest you do your research first.

From the press release on Rockcrawler.com...
The Wrangler Unlimited's 15 extra inches allow for 13 inches of additional cargo area and two inches more of second-row leg and knee space. So now, adults will actually be able to ride in the back and not be quite so cramped.
The rear seat was not moved back 5".
