if i set my cruise control, my rpms would dip a about 2k and then shoot back up. Almost like someone was blipping the throttle. this carried over to regular driving as well.

On my 5.9 my speed would be locked in with cruise control on but my RPM would hunt 200-300 RPM. Replaced the TPS and no more problems. Good luck!

Does the TPS have anything to do with the Transmition? Say making it hunt for gears between second and third?

I am suffering from an intermittent cruise control operation, and it it now surges in RPM, when it does decide to work - let me know if this could be related to a TPS failure please.

    Red face

I've heard one guy mention the tranny gear hunting b/t 2 and 3 @ around 35-40 mph can be caused by a bad TPS.
Mine does the same under moderate/normal acceleration. Lay it to the floor and it won't do the 2-3-2-3 gear shift boogy.
One of these days I'll replace mine. But for right now big lift, big tires, corrected steering, lockers, and stopping brakes are more important.

Larson, my cruise will simply not operate occasionally, and sometimes it will operate for a while and then "let go" and cease to function. Now it is operating more frequently, but it also surges when first engaging.

Does the degree to which the TPS is involved with the transmission's operation depend upon which series transmission you have (i.e. a RE vs. RH)?

i have a similar thread going "tranny trouble????????". i have the same probs. listed above. 1)my cruise works intermitently. 2) once it is warmed up it randomly will release the torque converter and rpms will jump 200 to 300. when mine first started doing this i realized that my brake pedal wasn't returning far enough to turn off the brake switch. i attatched a return spring to the brake pedal to make sure it was returning all the way. that solved the problem for a while. then when it started again i took it to a dealer and they couldn't get it to give a defect code. one of the mechanics suggested a TPS sensor and that seemed to cure the problem for a while but it is now doing it again. do you guys think a defective brake switch could have anything to do with the problem?

the mopar TPS part # for my 94 JGC with 318 quadra-trac is 04778463

the other reason i think it might have something to do with the brake switch is that when my torque converter releases i will always first pull back on the brake pedal to make sure it has returned all the way, a couple times i accidentally kicked the pedal forward and then the converter locked back up. i have tried this a few time the last week and that is the only thing i have been able to do to cause the converter to lock back up again. any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

    kwaskow,
It sounds like you may have dirty contacts in your cruise control steering wheel switches. The cruise control in my 93 JGC stopped working when my Speed Sensor in the transmission started to fail intermittently. I changed that and it works fine.

    Adept,
The P/N of the new upgraded Mopar TPS for my 98 5.9 is 05017479AA.

just thought i would let you know. i called the local parts store and they had a brake switch for 8 bucks. i pulled the old one out and it had a burnt terminal in it. put the new one in and everything works great. torque converter stays locked and the cruise control even seems to be working well. i am going out of town for business tomorrow. i'll let you know if it solved the problem totally or not when i get back on wed.

not that anybody cares, but the new brake light switch fixed the "surging RPM" (torque converter lock up problem) and the cruise control works perfectly now. i didn't think an 8 dollar switch could control/mess up so much crapp.
