    Post Suped up jeeps

how come there are hardly any jeeps featured in those magazines like Todays SUV and stuff...theres tahoes and suburbans left and right...i've only seen one ZJ and no WJs...in facts there are barely any of anything besides Ford GMC Chevy and 4Runners...what gives...theres gotta be some rich guys with ZJ's and WJ's and all.

I guess I've never paid any attention to that mag before. Maybe it's cause I don't really care about Exploders, Tahoes and Mallrunners. Although I have been noticing more coverage of ZJ's in about every other mag. Even if this only amounts to a picture every few months.

Well since Tahoes, Explorers and such are not very good off roaders, more owners tend to trick them out with poseur looking stuff... stereos, chrome, and other foo-foo stuff.

When a Jeep owner buys aftermarket parts, its usually lift, lockers, tires, and other items that make it a better trail vehicle... therefore, Jeeps tend to end up in 4x4 mags, rather than the "all show - no go" mags.

    Cool

I'll go with you on that post Bill. The Jeeps on the whole have a better weight/power ratio than most SUV's and most owners are happy with the stock performance. Others, like myself, want to open the performance envelope further.
I would like to see more reviews of souped up Jeeps such as the Kenne Bell Jeep Grand Cherokee Unlimited. Some time ago, there was a review of a Vortech supercharged 5.2 JGC. I still have the article if anyone wants some more info.
Have there been any reviews of a supercharged 4.0 XJ, ZJ or WJ? I know of at least three companies that supply blowers for the 4.0, but have not seen any write ups about them.

    Thumbs up

I also would like to see more featured souped up Jeeps, especially with 4.0L engines. Until then, I will just follow Kolak's and Dino's advise. So far I am very happy with the performance mods that Kolak has recommended.

The scoop on the Vortech supercharger for the 5.2 JGC is this. It is a belt-driven V1-S centrifugal blower, which needs less horsepower to drive it than a Roots-type blower.
Maximum boost is 6psi, resulting in 309hp/355lbft according to Vortech. A Mopar computer, K&N Filtercharger, headers and a 3" cat-back are needed to realise these outputs.
The Vortech JGC as tested did 0-60 in 6.8 secs, and the 1/4 mile in 91.7mph/15.2secs.
Price for the blower is estimated at $3500.
Unfortunately, I was unable to open the Vortech website www.vortechengineering.com but Summit Racing do supply these items.

Found the website. It is www.vortechsuperchargers.com. Two corrections to my last post. The supercharger is a V2-SQ type and claimed outputs are actually 309hp/365lbft.
Vortech have applications for 93-95 and for 96 models only.

Wouldn't a Mopar ECU, K&N Filtercharger, Headers, Exhaust, and a swapped throttle body leave you with pretty similar results? And you could pocket the $1500-1700 you save and have the peace-of-mind of a naturally aspirated vehicle.
Thats just my take, even though the thought of a 'charged 318 is so tantalizing, the cost just doesnt seem to justify the output. Could i be mistaken?

Fasteddy, you are right. You would also need to add a high-flow cat and ported cylinder heads to your list. Altogether, these mods would produce a very nice 305hp/360lbft, almost matching a Vortech-supercharged 5.2 but with better low-rev torque.
Give me efficient normally-aspirated horsepower over forced induction anyday.
