YJ BL writeup

I'm doing some research for a friend that has a YJ and is planning on doing a BL. Does any of you know where I can find some good info and write-ups on BL installations on YJ's?

It's a homemade BL, do you need the same kinds of bolds as TJ's?

The bolts arent the same size as the TJ's.

EDIT: THIS IS FOR A 1" BL! The bolt lenghts have 1" added to stock lenghts and if you are doing more than a 1" BL, add the extra lenght to the bolts.

You'll need 5, 7/16" x 3.5" grade 8 bolts and washers (to make the head wider)

You'll need 6, 1/2" x 4.5" grade 8 bolts and washers also.

Just loosen all the bolts and remove one side, leaving the other side still bolted, but loose. Jack up one side, be sure to use a block of wood to increase the surface area, and install the BL over the stock mounts. Put in the bolts, not tight, just in there so the body stays lined up, then do the same for the other side, tighten all bolts when you're done and it's a good idea to put some blue loctite on em when you put them back in. Don't overtighten them... I wasnt even meaning to and one of the nuts inside the body (just under the passenger side seat) stretched the housing it was in and allowed it to move freely.

If this happen you'll need to remove the seat, cut a hole in the floor where the nut is, drill into the nut, stick in a centerpin to hold it in place against the housing, and remove. There may be an easier way to do this but that's the method I use, unfortunately now I have bondo on the Jeep http://forums.jeepsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif Just about the size of a $.50 piece though http://forums.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/images/ubb/biggrin.gif.

You'll also need to lift the radiator or relocate the fan shroud.

BTW, what type of material are you using for the BL?

We're using 2" diameter aluminium.

The BL is gonna be a 1.5" so basically it would be the same as you described, just longer bolds right?
