View Full Version : YJ T-Case Shifter On A TJ???

A buddy and myself were doing some thinking on the way back from a 4 wheeling trip this weekend. Personally, I am sick of the crappy t-case linkage on the TJ's. Then when you do a body lift or lower your skid-plate the linkage becomes worse...even with that stupid drop bracket. If you don't set the linkage just right, you won't get 4 wheel drive or even worse, it pops out while you're on an obstacle.

That got me to thinking. I remember on my old YJ's that they didn't use a linkage. The shifter rod went right to the t-case.

Now, my obvious question, why couldn't TJ owners take a YJ shifter and put it on their TJ's t-case? Yeah, I know that you would have to modify the center console a little bit. That's no big deal. Does anyone think that this would work? I need to crawl under a YJ again to see how it's set-up, but I'm guessing that this swap will work.

Anyone want to comment on this? Anyone thought of this already? Anyone done this?

One word..........Atlas

Seems like you could rig up a bracket which would use threaded rod and a heim end to pivot. The bracket is already on the t-case with a pivot hole so it should work with some engineering.

Is that why the TJ shifter is so sloppy? I didn't know there was a different kinda linkage on the new TJ's. I'm not doggin' my new TJ, but on my YJ, the t-case shifted a lot firmer, without so much play!
Guesss I never really go a chance to take a closer look!
Just ramblin!

heres a mod grainville king would love!!!

take a old choke cable preferably rusty.

vice grips and bailing wire and duct tape for looks.

work the cable through the shifter hole in the tunnel. tape it to the seat bracket..clamp it to the shifter on the t-case after you secured the cable shroud on the old shifter mount with bailing wire..

the vice grips should hold as linkage as long as you dont shift in and out too much..

if you dont know who grainville king is..well he was great at improvising any trail fix...(R.I.P.)

rabid..that sounds like a good idea.id switch over too if it didnt mess up my center console..if you can make it work id like to see a write up buddy!!

I would definitely like to try the Yj shifter idea, as I have the linkage rattle as well. I have given up on getting rid of it butI have gotten rid of most of it by playing with the linkage. If it will work than you definitely came up with a good idea Rabid! I am going to peek under the next Yj I see with that type of shifter to get some ideas. It is too bad it is winter because it is going to get messy lokking under someones Jeep right now!
