Posting this for a friend...
He's running 4-5" lift (31's) and is getting set to regear and add a locker. He wants to run 32-11:50's or 33-12.50's and was wondering what gear ratio would better suit his application. He does a bit of highway travel so it's gotta pull a hill and not over rev at 70mph.
I realize the 4:88's are just now available and may not have been proven, anyone have personal input or a site where i can check RPM with different gear ratios at a given MPH? What's the views on the 4:88's small pinion size?
Also, what backspacing are ya'll running with 11.50 or 12.50's?
Any input greatly appreciated.

I had a friend that had a Toyota PU, 4cyl, stick, 33s, and I believe he run 4.88 gears. He did all 4+ trails at Moab. Maybe this site will help.

When I had the stock diffs in my 4 banger YJ, I ran 4.56 with 33x12.5 Swampers. They were a very tall 33. It was ok. If he does any serious wheeling, I would stay away from the 4.88s. The pinion gear for the 35 and 30 will be very small, making it very prone to breaking. The ratio would have been nice, but 4.56 on a 32in tire would be great. I switched to dana 44s front and rear with 5.29 gears to turn the 36x12.5 swampers. The ratio is almost the same now as when it was stock.

What size engine?
What transmission - auto or manual?

John, I had 33's and the 4.56's on my YJ. A great setup, anything more would be overkill unless he is only doing the rocks. Just my opinion.

My 90 YJ/I-6 auto is set up with 33x12.50 MT's, D30 front, D35C rear, 3:73 gears, detroit EZ-Lockers front and rear. I rock crawl (read: NOT a daily driver) and have absoltely no problems with this set up. If he drives more on road than he can get by with 4:10's (auto tranny). I just don't like 4:10's because of the "Lurch" Factor when crawling.

Thanks for the input guys.
The YJ is a 4 cyl with Manual and 4:10's. I think he would be better off with the 4:56 gears and the 32 or 33's.Hopefully i can talk him out of the 4:88's...he has a heavy foot offroad. http://jeepsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif
