Okay heres the deal I know all the basics and have a 2.5" RE lift the is shot. it needs to be replaced but this time I am really going to do my homework.
So please help:
1) Year of YJ
2) Name of spring (RE,OME etc)
3) Height advertised
4) Actually height installed
5) Sagging factor after - month year 2 years etc
6) Price of lift
7) Other info you want to share (happy not happy love it etc)
Thanks for all your help. I need to decide what size springs to get and what company to go with. Thus far I have almost entirely ruled out RE but nothing is permanent.

1. 89
2. Pro-Comp
3. Advertised...4 inch.
4. Actual...4 1/2
5. Not one bit of sag thus far.
6. About 450.00 with shocks
7. Need better shocks. Ride is stiff, but most definitely bearable. I am replacing shocks. I like these springs because I have a winch and a YB tire carrier. The extra weight would sink some lifts. I get good flex on the trail (good for what I do anyway). Pro-Comp isn't for everyone, but it is one of the only lifts that consistantly provides the claimed amount of lift.

87 YJ, Skyjacker 4",1.5 AAL, actual after 4 years is still just shy of 6", Cost was around $400 if memory serves, ride is a 7 on a 1-10 scale, would have went with nitros instead of hydros but otherwise I love it, still flexes a 762 on a 30 degree ramp.

I was really in favor of RE till I heard yours and several other complaints, ok anything can fail and a lemon gets by even the most stringent manufacturers but RE has racked up long run complaints against quality, and customer support both negatives in my book. I would probably go with OME but that is alot of cash for something as simple as a leaf spring and in the end I will in all likelyhood end up going with something like BDS or have my local spring shop make me up a set to my specs (they did a set for my Stude that are working great).

Thanks. Its good(bad) to see that I'm not the only one who has had springs sag out.
Keep them coming. What is BDS? I know OME is suposed to be great but for that price it is kinda out of my league. What about rusty's anyone have that 3.5" kit?

I have the BDS 3.5 Kit on my 94 YJ. Got about 4.5 inches of lift at first and am not sure about what i have know, i would say it is pretty darn close to 3.5 but i am putting new tires on monday and that should give me a little more. In order to protect myself against sagging i bought 4 front springs b/c of the fact that they are stronger than the back. I think i am done sagging, i have only hasd for a couple of months though.
Brian
I payed $440 for the kit and also got the BDS shocks which were like $25 a piece. Very happy with it and no one can touch their warranty!

7) Jeepik, as he is known on this board, sold them too me. I bought Doestch Tech Shocks for $29 Bucks a pop and the ride is great compared to what it used to be. Most springs sag about .5 to 1 inch, so it really didn't matter that they were used. The Price Was Right. Can't beat $50 bucks.

5) Curently run 2.5" after 1 year of use
6) I think it cost me around $500 with the Pro Comp ES9000 shocks
7) The ride is stiff and the springs don't flex as much as I'd like. You've got to keep everything greased and loose to smooth the ride out. I'm running a 2" body lift as well so I didn't need to install the kit bump stops (32x11.5 BFG MTs). The shocks suck. Within 3 months of install one rear shock leaked fluid and a front shock made a clunking sound. They replaced the front one under warranty but I ditched the rears in favor of some RS5000's. I'll probably swap out the fronts for some Doestch shocks soon.

Man it would seem that alot of YJ lifts sag out. For all of you who think you are done sagging it may not be so. My RE came in at like 3" + new but now (1 year) they are more like 1-1.5" total.
I also have heard some rumors that RE uses procomp springs for their basic kit, a reputable source later told me that is not so. It opens the topic to question.
What is BDS?

It is a problem with leaf springs the way they are designed is prone to sag of course any wise manufacturer is wise to this as is the reason you see people with 2" kits claim 4 inches of lift. Dont get me wrong this is the way it is till they work in it is a leaf spring thing. I believe BDS is the only one to advertise a no sag (below advertised height) lifetime guarentee if I am right. They are the lead contestent for me unless I go with the above mentioned custom.

Ditto the previous post, I'm still sitting just a little under 6" even with the I-6 and a hardtop, I've had it on for about 3 months and I've wheeled it probably 10-15 times, it started out higher than that, combined with the 2" BL my 33's look more like 30's. I like the RE lift a lot more than my previos lift, (Rusty's) I had it on for about 2 months, in which time it sagged from the advertised 3.5" down to a little over 2".

BDS = Big Dick Suspension
From what I understand, the name got them in some trouble, so they now only market as BDS.
And as far as their warranty, I don't remember the exact words, but it's something to the effect of: If you buy a part from us, and it breaks; We'll replace it for free. PERIOD.
Anyway, here's my info.

I don't know what the stock height was, but it grew. And the only sag I've noticed is when I threw on an aftermarked bumper/tire carrier and a winch.

That is one reason BDS is coming to the top of my list reported good service (RE has not gotten high marks), it is cheaper, full mil wrap, and the no sag below advertised height guarentee. Only ticker is they are supposed to rub the frame and hitches with stock length shackles so you may need to add a mild shackle lift (.5 to 1") to the package. Most people report them as being stiff initially but wearing down to about the same or better than stock which makes sense with a leaf spring if you build them soft right out of the box you are going to get a saggy spring if you build them stiff with 10k wear they will settle into a nice equilibrium.
Goodluck!

I've got the BDS 3.5" and as JimBob mentioned the rear does rub a bit. I'm in the process of fabricating some new rear shackles to take care of my 3/4' lowrider problem.
I've had the suspension fairly torqued and twisted and never had any problems otherwise.
The reason I went with BDS is a friend of mine had one on his YJ; totaled the YJ, called BDS and they replaced the broken parts. He then bought another YJ and slapped the new set on.
What a warranty!

If the second leaf of the spring pack wraps all the way around the eye of the main leaf, it is called a full military wrap. This way you are protected from breaking your spring off of the shackle or the frame mount.

Maybe I could take and add a leaf to my sagged springs. Think that would help. It seems affordable?
Dan
Jimbob
07-09-2001, 11:26 PM
Add a leaf would definetly give you your height back but will make your ride stiffer and should last a little while. Just remember your U bolts are getting lower and lower under the axle not that much of an issue but it is something more to potentially scrape if you are really rock'in it.
As to that full military wrap thing it is just a little added insurance to me especially considering I manuever alot on my own prospecting, rockhounding, fishing etc so every inch of backup I can add is good. Though the chances of that failure are relatively low. There are about 3 different configurations going around with the 2nd leaf in the pack 1. Stock like 2nd leaf ends well before the spring eye leaving a lot of spring to break or bend. 2. 2nd leaf extends out to the spring eye or slightly around providing no spring eye break protection but reinforcing the weak spot in the spring I believe this is what OME is doing despite what there flyer says about full military wrap (nixed for rubbing?). 3. Then full military wrap giving you reinforcement along the whole length of the primary leaf which is taking the brunt of the stress and reinforcing the spring eye. I dont have to much experience with this type of spring but would think it would make it stiffer but most people claim BDS to be extremely flexy when worked out.

Who knows more about the Military wrap?
Anyone have used springs for sale??

1) Military wrap is a good thing, from a strength standpoint. BDS recommends longer shackles to compensate for that and to prevent binding.
2) Jeepik...what do you want for the saggy Superlift springs. If they sagged evenly.....I don't mind that they have sagged. I only need about 2-2.5" of lift anyway. I only need to clear 33s.

Love the SOA travel and ride but wish I would have went with the RE 1.5" complete springs designed for SOA - I've seen them on other jeeps and they seen to work better than what I have. I also did the shackle reversal and cranked the caster up for improved road manners. Drives great! Total investment was about $750 to get it all to work correctly.

Just remember OME arnt military wrap though they do partially wrap ask Charly how much he is the only person that I can think of off hand that has a OME YJ lift. Oh yes and DNA but havent seen him about much of late. I am still tossing around the shackle reversal mayself I may do it on my studebaker truck (home fabbed) first since I am setting it up for PS anyways (taking a loooooong time I know) but remember you will need a new front drive shaft.
