View Full Version : Why no parts for pre-74
Hi guys...I'm from the GC board...but I have a question regarding an old full size Jeep truck. I believe it a 3/4 ton(J-4000?), has a 360 with a 4 speed with granny low and a limited slip rear end. I think it is a 1973 model. We have had trouble finding new rear drums for it, as well as other parts. And most suspension places offer 1974 and newer kits. Why is this? Anybody know?
Also..the truck has a/c...but continually blows the fuse...any ideas on that?
Thanks...

I'll field this question...
You have the Dana 60-2 if it has a quadratrac, and the Dana 60 if you have the Dana20 transfer-case. Dead giveaway is the offset differential in the 60-2.
Anywho, Dana60's were offered with 13" oversized HD drum brake shoes. If you have an Autozone nearby you, they can easily order them and have them to you within' 3 days. I have to order them all the time. If you have the regular sized drums, then you should be able to get them right off the shelf there.
A/C system has a short in it... probably the wire that engages the clutch is dry-rotted. I'd start there.
Lift's for 74 and older aren't popularly made because the numbers of 75-91's are far greater. The springs were mounted on the *sides* of the frame for pre-74 models. Spring manufacturers can custom order you a set if you give them the eye-to-eye measurements. Rusty's Off-road is also in the process of designing a spring system for pre-74's. It's just a matter of time.
Best of luck to you.

Jeep completely redesigned the FSJ's for the 1974 model year. New instrument panel, new axles, disc-brakes, 1" change in wheelbase, new suspension mounting points, new designation for the J-trucks, added the 401ci motor as an option, change in the Wagoneer grille, and some smaller things as well.
This means that lifts, gas-tanks and such will only fit '74 and up trucks (the other break point for a major mechanical redesign was 1980, so some parts are only listed for '74-'79 models, while others are for '80-'91).
That leaves the '63-'73 as kind of aftermarket orphans; not as many were made in the first-place, and not many survive, especially compared to the plentiful '74-'79 trucks.
