I've searched on this as well as on other forums but still get conflicting answers -- even from a Jeep dealer. Will an AX15 from a TJ replace my blown AX15 in my '93 YJ???? Will an AX15 from a Cherokee fit my '93 YJ??

Just when I think I get a handle on what will and what won't interchange, I get/read a different answer. PLEASE...someone give me a difinitive answer to this!

TIA!

Here's some info that'll possibly cloud things even more for you. ;)

There obviously are some differences. Whether they can be easily overcome - I don't know.

Perhaps call Novak or AA and see what they have to say.

I swapped an AX15 from a '97 TJ into my '93 YJ. When I had them both out on the floor, they appeared to be exactly the same, although I didn't go so far as to measure anything. It was strictly a bolt-in operation.....but I did use the bell from the '97 and upgraded to the external slave cylinder(if you elect to do this, you'll need the master/slave combo for a '95 YJ, bolts right up).
From what I have read and heard about, the Chero AX15's are supposedly different, although I've never had one in front of me to study.

i also have a '93 with an ax-15, but it is behind a 4 cyl. engine. it came from a tj of unknown year, but it was a later model. the only physical difference was that it has mounting bosses cast onto the driver side for the transfer case shifter brackets. they just got ground off and everything fit well. the guy who sold it to me at the shop said they have better synchros; it has been a while but i'm sure that is what he told me.

I have a 93 YJ and need a transmission. I found a donor, 1994 Cherokee. It has a 4.0 and NP231 surrounding the tranny (same setup as my YJ). Follow-Up question. Does anyone knwo if this is direct swap. The Novak site appears to say it is the same.

i also have a tj tans in my yj it was the exact samething. As far as an xj trans internally they are the same the problem with them is that the tcase is clocked lower so it would most likely hit the crossmember. I stayed away from trying to fudge an xj trans in and just found the tj trans.

UPDATE: Well the answer is.....YES. This was a simple cut-n-paste, plug-n-play. I bolted the '97 TJ tranny to my '93 bellhousing and kept the internal slave set-up (but replaced while I there). Started at 7:30 a.m., finished at 5:30 p.m.
