hey guys i have a 88 YJ with 90,000 miles on it. with the straight 6 - 258* ive had this issue with the valve cover on it. the bolts on it seem to loosen up over time, a short period of time, and it always leaked oil. I tried loctite and other things.
Anyways i noticed a larger leak on the right side of the jeep (passenger side) the larger leak had coverd the entire right side of the jeep in oil. I mean it caked everything in oil. ok, so i took a spray can of uunder hood, degreaser. and to my realization it was not the leak i had normaly had with the valve cover. the valve cover is not leaking, that i can see. but ive had the thing clean now for a week and im not noticing any leaking of oil now or see any spots where the oil is coming out of. both Pvc valves are in place and not leaking that i can tell. hmm
My question is, is there an Oil line on that side of the engine that could be leaking or is there anything i could just not be seeing that is causing this oil leak.
What have yall seen in your time.
Thanks Much, MudEatter

I am not as familiar with the 258 as I am with the 4.0, however on my 4.0, my oil pressure sensor which plugged in around the ditributor went bad and when the oil pressure built up, it would spray out of that sensor and get all over that side of the motor.

Only things I can think of other than what's already been mentioned are the dipstick "O"-ring, & the fuel pump gasket.

and see this makes sense, it does push oil out when it gets warmed up. I looked at the oil pressure switch/ sensor and it just bolts on, i dont think it could be getting out that way, ill have to look again.
and the o ring seems to be in tact,
Any more tips?

I just had to replace my dipstick tube/sleeve because it was broken and oil was all over the right side of the engine. It's a 4.0 but it also might be the source.

I know you were wondering about the lines...but on my CJ i had the same problem and it ended up being the gasket. Just thought i would recommend that.

Check the fuel pump gasket too, & the distributor "O"ring.
Just for kicks, go over the torque sequence on the valve cover. start near the center, & spiral your way out towards the ends. I do this, or at least check it twice a year.

Yeah i have to tighten the valve covers roughly twice a year also. Thats not the issue suprisingly. Im leaning towards replacing the o ring in the dip stick, just havnt had the time, plus its been snow here in Illinois, haha.
Ive noticed tho that, yes it does leak more when it gets warmed up. and then the pressure drops a bit not alot. but the majority of the oil is located nearest to the front passenger side motor mount. Thats the spot where it is just soaked at... But i cant see a specific location of the leak. maybe its the pan. ill crawl under it this saturday, it should be almost 50 i think!!!

Have you tried starting it up and having somebody work the throttle to get the RPM's up and see if you can spot it leaking?
