When I bought my yj it had a crushed rear drivers side corner that has been bondo and painted and dented again. so I was thinking I might be able to cover it with the diamond corners. I am looking for inexpensive ways to make overall appearance better because I don't want to sink a ton of money into the heap. so my question is how does one prep the existing steal under the diamond plate parts to prevent it from rotting out from behind?

If you know how to weld you can get a corner patch panel from JC Whitney for about $25. Covering a messed up panel just invites rust no matter what you do.

Just make sure that any bare metal is painted with a high quality paint. I took and put a bead of RTV around my corners. I made the bead cover about 1-2 inches all the way around the backside of the corners just in case, to prevent water from getting behind it. I even RTV'ed the rivets to keep water from seeping in from behind.

Thanks ........ I'll keep all that in mind. patch would be cheaper because my paint is already for ****. but it is the driver side closer to the fuel filler. I will have to ponder this a while.

Just for covering up the dent, you could mask off where the corners will go and spray undercoating on it or that spray on bedliner to prevent corrosion/rust between the two pieces..
