View Full Version : Thinking about cutting my front fenders...flare options?

I need to do some body work on the front fenders and thought I would do the flat fender cut. Problem is, here in PA, I have to have the tires covered. I'm not completely covered now, but the stock flares have kept the locals happy. But I know that if I don't have anything on them, I'll draw way too much attention. Anyone have any suggestions for flares for flat cut fenders? BTW...pics are always welcome. :)

I hear ya when you say PA laws suck...I live in Harrisburg and last summer got tube fenders for the front built by A-TO-Z fabrications. They are 5.25" but I told him to make them as wide as they had to be just to be legal...no more. I know this isn't what you were looking for, but maybe I can sway you to get tube fenders. I love them, they're rock solid and real nice lookin.

If that is out of your price range, you can try those new Xenon Flat fenders at Quadratec.

YJ4Life....thanks for the idea....wonder if I can retrofit those fenders. :)
Flyer, I like the flats you have, but was thinking that since my fenders were pretty well hammered, I'd experement a bit.

How much fender tire coverage do you need?
I have xenon 6.5" TJ flares..... You have to cut sheetmetal (about 1") for installation. Mainly bought these cuz they offer 1" of clearance for up travel/35's - and keep the tires covered.

If you're set on flat fenders, you might touch base with sniperfab.com. I'm not familiar with the requirements of PA but they might be able to fab up one of their kits for you to give you what you need.

One of the front pieces was bent, and since it looked (from the top) like it simply bolted on to the rest of the fencer, I decided to remove it. I quickly discovered that it is actually part of the fenderwell, but since I had my mind set on getting it off, I used my trusty sawz-all. I just finished with my angle grinder, and am now trying to figure out what to do next.
Since my build is not typical (drag/cruising/hotrod Jeep) my front tires are much more narrow than my rears, so I would need 2 different size flares. I just bought some fiberglass and want to try designing them myself to fit my specific needs. If I screw up, I can always bring it to my buddy that owns a body shop
Personally, I prefer the flat flares and hope it wont be too hard to create. My plan is to cut off the part that bends down, then pop rivit a plastic strip around the outside then cover it with fiberglass, rounding off the front and back. I will do the entiver rubber part, making it rigid and part of the fender. Then I will paint it the same color as the car. Should make for an interesting (and messy) project.

Yes it should....I'll be interested to see how it turns out.
I still havent come up with a solution for my problem. I appreciate all the suggestions, but I'd like to modify/add to my stock fenders in some way. Just not sure how to do it without making it looked hacked up.

Personally, I never really liked the way the stock flares look like they are just thrown on as an afterthought. I prefer the new Jeep's one piece design in the front. That is the look I am going after, but I also like the way the Jeeps resemble the old T Bucket hot rods, and would like to try to keep that theme.
I will send photos as I work on this idea. But I have so many things to do on the Jeep I have to stay focused on one thing at a time (I am also working on the stereo system and gauge replacement). And one of these days I should put my new Super Top on- I am tired of tripping on that huge box in my garage!

I couldn't disagree with you more....WAY to much plastic on the new JKs.

I dont like plastic any more than the next guy. But I do like the clean look of the one piece design. I am thinking about ditching the marker light and putting a small round one inside each side of the front tube behind the bumper.
