View Full Version : 95 YJ -- need some tranny help (AX-5)
I was heading up a hill and I needed to downshift from 5th. I went to throw it in 4th and all I got was alot of grinding. Wouldn't go in gear. Put it back into 5th and tried again. Still wouldn't go. Ended up losing enough momentum to put it in 3rd. Went in with no problems. Tried the 5th to 4th downshift a few miles later and had no problems.
Anybody ever encounter this? Do I need synchronizers?
Thanks.

Since this seems to have occured to you in the same time frame as the theft problem, (post theft issue), I'd be knocking on the door of my insurance agent and telling them that you are certain that this is theft related because it never acted like this before. The unusual characteristics of the way your Jeep drives are directly related to the mishaps your Jeep incurred while in the "custody" of the thief(s).
Let them figure out if the tranny is 100% or not. You are the victim.
SORRY this happend. Hope it is corrected soon.
to clarify, the Jeep wasn't stolen from me. i bought it at a salvage yard. got it nice and cheap, so i don't really mind sinking money in it. just trying to figure out what the problem is.

I would guess synchros, but don't junk the tranny just yet. Replace the gear oil with synthetic and it will probably be just fine. Take it easy on upshifts and downshifts, pausing slightly to let the rpm's drop before putting it in gear. I've went from 4th to 5th quickly and lost 5th gear, happened twice now. I've got it fixed and use syn gear oil, and I take it easy from 4th to 5th. If I go too quickly, I can feel resistance, which caused the problem. Good Luck.
