Help shifter wont work

I pulled the shifter out of my Peugeot BA 10/5 (87 yj with 4.2) and I went to install it again and it went in fine but wont shift. It jiggles side to side about an 1 inch or 2 but thats it. It is stuck in first gear to boot. so what am I doing wrong? Is there a method of installation I missed or did not do when I removed it?

I had the same problem with mine. Keep pulling it out and jiggling it as you put it back in, try holding to one side, then the other. Eventually it will find the right spot. Took me a while.

I have tried every kind of wiggle to jiggle there is and have had no luck. Please any one know how to help me. Its still stuck in first gear. Im about to go out of my mind! :hairpull:
