View Full Version : ON THE TRAIL...WHATS THE MOST COMMON BREAKAGE??

I'm new at crawling, what is the most common brakage when on trails?

I want to start gathering some stuff to keep on the Jeep for on trail repairs.

Also get an idea on what I will be fixing on a regular basis.

I have a 95 4.0, 5 spd, 1" BL, 4" SL, reverse shackle w/sulastics, stock axles (which are on deck for gears and lockers).

Dana 35 shafts and spider gears. If you're keeping the Dana 35 add a truss to it to keep the housing from bending and blowing the spider gears. A disk brake conversion will keep the c-clip axles from breaking too.

Other than that the only breakage I really ever see is engine mounts and brake lines.

turn the caps off man. I've broken engine mounts, windshields, lights, u-joints, belts, hoses, axle shafts, door paddles, and a bunch of other things.

Deej was right on, I'd only add U-joints

What going to break is what ever you did not bring an extra of. That's my luck.

In the past watching others, I would say:

1. U-joints / Driveshafts
2. Front Axles
3. Rear Axles
4. Ball Joints (saw one time - guy was just driving to the trail and pop goes his wheel).
5. Yokes
6. Wheel bearings / Axle hub bearings

I wheel like there is a egg between my foot and gas pedal. Call me light foot. I have seen to many heavy foots break to many parts. When they get on rocks, they like to bounce the wheels. That only equals u-joints breaking.

Take it slow and easy and that should save you from having to replace parts on the trail. Before you go, check hoses, belts, fluids, u-joints and etc.

Get a creeper, roll under the jeep, point at anything. That is likely to be broken, point to something else, that is too. It's really a crap shoot. I've seen people dump oil, heat the tranny until the fluid spews out of the fill tube and catches fire, sheer center pins in leaf springs, bend tie rods, break the tie rod ends, (In one trip, I saw four broken tie rods.), break axel shafts...

If you're new to crawling, slow and easy does it.

Get some armor for the diff covers, engine skid, and gas tank. Carry tierod ends, spare axel shafts, fluids, tools, and (most importantly) a smart driver.

Be careful with the shackel reversal, they're great for the road, but you can land hard on the spring and shackel coming off a rock.

well, for me... it was the last lower lumbar vertebra @ L5/S1. :jump:

and maybe a couple center pins along the way. :wavin2:

I agree, my wallet is always broke.

U-joints!

I carry u-joints. For the axles and driveshafts.

My drivetrain is not stock so I don't carry axle shafts. But if it were stock...Axle shafts, front and rear. All 4 axle shafts are unique, at least on my 8.8/super 30 combo, btw.

Extended brake line. I carry an extra front brake line. Broke one once and that's why the spare.

Fan belt- I carry this as it is so important to the running of the engine.

ARB blue hose and coupler. I carry these for the lockers, just in case.

Most importantly-
Duct tape and bailing wire.

If you like to wheel alone, & you don't have A winch, sooner or later you'll experience heartbreakage. Or something closely resembling it.:(

just bring a whole other jeep with you for parts...

ive broken all thats been listed and then some.. what id suggest is a couple ratchet straps to tie stuff back together some zipties, duct tape, big fn hammer, tool set, random bolts 1/2" come in handy alot, a high lift, electric tape,... stuff like that and a couple ujoints if you cant limp it out of the woods with some of that stuff you broke it real good and can always use your phone to call for more parts ha

Well, the stuff I usually break, isn't the most common breakage, I have this tendencey to tear the control arm mounts off the axles or the body and pound the driveshaft through the transfer case, brake lines and shocks get torn off on the way,

but I think thats just me

HI,
In no particular order:
- Tie rods/steering components
- Springs
- Axles
- Differentials
- U joints
- Exhaust pipes and hangers
- Cooling system

I think the most common breakage is EGO.

Be careful with the shackel reversal, they're great for the road, but you can land hard on the spring and shackel coming off a rock.

i'm running sulastics (a hinged shackle with a rubber spring) on the back of all 4 springs, it really soaks up tons of negative energy on the trail...and rides great on the road too. i am very happy with the lift.

Shackle reversals are great for on road performance, but does it hang lower than the stock location of the main eye? If so, that will be the first thing that is hit when you cross over a steep rock.
I tried to look up the "sulastics" on the internet, can you post pics of this? I've never seen one.
I've seen one shackle reversal on the trail that was great, but it was more of a horizontal slider on the frame instead of a main eye bolt and the front was stationaity, of course.

i am extremely happy with my setup, on and off the road. i would highly recommend it. the website is:

https://www.sulastic.com/default.aspx

and i will take some pics today and post them.

the mount that replaces the front shackle doesn't really hang any lower than a shackle would, but the sulastics are pretty big, so its like having a shackle lift.

not here in the tech section. the easiest way is getting a photobucket account and using the "embedded" link they create for each pic, then paste it in your post. follow this link
