My Jeep seems to be stuck in four wheel drive. When I shift into 2 wheel, the front axle appears to disengage, but the 4wd light stays on and the front driveshaft is still engaged.

I had a problem with my vacuum lines going to the front axle a few months ago, but I found the leak and fixed it. My problem at that point was no four wheel drive.

I'm going to check the linkage, but it feels OK.

Any ideas?

Probably the vacuum shift motor on the front axle. Ditch the whole vacuum set up and install a cable shift

But when I shift into 2wd the front driveshaft spins but the front wheels do not. If the vacuum system was messed up wouldn't the wheels keep spinning?

If the light is on then the vacuum motor still has the passenger side axle engaged (or the 4WD switch on the axle is bad).
Sometimes mositure/water gets into the vacuum motor and it freeze's
not allowing the vacuum motor to function.
An easy test is:
1) Set the parking brake (block the wheels if necessary)
2) Start the Jeep, put in in 2 HI & tranny in neutral
3) There should be vacuum on the outermost line to the vacuum motor

If there is vacuum on the outer line then it's a problem with the vacuum motor.
If there is no vacuum on the outer line then there is a vacuum problem.

You were right - another vacuum line problem. Fixed it, got it out of 4wd, then had to fix the other line again. Time to get a cable-operated system.

Thanks again...
