i know this is old and probably no time , but could someone get me a pic of where the 4wd indicator light vac hose is supposed to be on my firewall by the battery? i think things are way changed on my jeep. it's a 93 yj 2.5 stock 5spd. the vac lines are connected on the axle. i DO have 4WD when i shift the transfer case shifter and no problems taking it out, i just don't have a 4wd light showing its in. thanks and i hate to be a pest but it's just not right.

i knew something was amiss. i found the 3rd vac hose hanging in limbo up by the firewall. it was kinda hidden. the dirty sons a -------!!!! so now i believe there is no indicator switch ,because there is a void and a cut ground wire on the firewall.

thanks dbikers, i don't have anything that looks like that. guess i will have to do some more snooping around. i sure hate not knowing what to look for. i just might have to BREAK DOWN and take it to someone who knows what they are doing. i'm sure i'll get tricked on that one...

you can get them off any cherrokee i here from the late 80's early 90's and yj's went to the switch on the actuator in 91 so 87-90 jy's will have them too if you have a wreckin yard near ya it might be worth the drive and find one with some good wires

ok dbikers, where does the vac hose go from there to the light ??? does it travel along the firewall and through it to the light? i cant find anything so i dont know what i'm missing.. aren't those famous last words !!!!!

hey mark1001, i've checked the yards, they don't have any wranglers. all of them are taken and rebuilt.. are you saying i don't have a vac hose to the light? is it electrical then? there is a electrical switch on the actuator on the axle. is this the trouble spot possibly? i've checked for loose, and frayed wires-- none to be had. mines a 93 yj

no problem mossdown....it should be on the firewall right next to your heater hoses (from the pic you see the hoses and the batt tray is to the left). The hose should come from your vac motor on the front axle (see diagram)
If that switch is missin and the vac hose isn't plugged somewhere then you'll have probs with your vac motor on the axle.I'd check to see if your 4wd is working ...if it is who cares about an indicator on the dash?
just my :2cents:

well, the blue thing is actually a switch with wires....vacuum just actuates or makes the switch go on or off...i think that the wires would go back to the light in your dash...
i hope this helps (along with the vac diagram i posted a minute ago)...

great help dbikers, but i still don't have the goodies. my 4wd does work fine , i just don't have a light. i thought it could be an easy fix but now i know i will need some more fixins to get it viewable.. thanks again.

if it has wires on the actuator the switch is there, and there wont be anything on the firewall. so disconect the wires going to it and put an ohm meter on the wires and engage and disengage your 4x4 and it should open and close if it doesnt its in the switch if it does in in the wireing or the light on the dash

don't sweat the small stuff...i would however pull the vac motor and see if the fork moves when you shift from 2wd to 4wd and back. If it does you're good to go...if not yer vac may be a bit hosed up (no put intended). If it doesn't move back and forth when you shift you'll need to think about fixin' yer vac stuff or getting a posi-lock...there are quick and easy fixes for vac issues

mossdown,

The switch that activates your 4WD light is on the front axle.
It's located on the drivers side of the vacuum disconnect.
There should be 2 wires that go to it and they are grouped
together with the two vacuum lines that go to the vac disconnect shift motor on the axle.

The blue vacuum switch on the firewall by the battery tray was on older YJ models but NOT yours.

FYI - The vacuum diagram shown a few posts up does not apply to your Jeep.
It's incorrectly labelled as 1987-1995. It's only applicable to 1987 - 1990.
In 1991 the firewall vacuum switch was eliminated and the 4WD light switch was
incorporated into the vac motor housing on the axle.
Also the vacuum line that ran from the axle to the firewall switch was eliminated.

that's awesome info kloppk.:thup2: i only know from experience with my own ('89) that it's got the goofy switch on the firewall...yeah, i got the vac circuit from like faq's on this or another forum and it says 87 to 95, so i thought that all yj's had them:embarass: ..so, they basically simplified the vac circuit (and on 91 and newer there's 1 less place to develop a vac leak)
mossdown, heed the info that kloppk has posted here, you should be able to determine where your problem is...
good luck:chugger:
