No reverse on automatic transmission until warms up?

I have a 89 yj with the automatic transmission. The transmission will not go into reverse when I first start it. After it warms up, it will shift into reverse with no problems. I changed the fluid with atf+4 and also changed the filter. I drove it about five miles and after that it would shift perfectly every time. I let it sit for about 3 hours and it still would shift into reverse fine. After about five hours of sitting, it would not go into reverse again until warming up. Any suggestions? It seems like a pressure problem but I am not sure on how or why. It will shift through all forward gears fine all the time. Please help anybody????

time for an overhaul.... what happens is the seals get brittle and when its cold they dont seal well. when it warms up the seals become more pliable and start to do there job better.

you can try some of that trans additive stuff that is supposed to sofen up old seals... but the best fix is have the trans gone through. i know thats not what you want to hear but i suppose its better to hear it from someone who is not trying to take your money first.
