I have a problem with the transmission in my 89 YJ...first off I bought it with a AMC 304, dana 44's and a 727 tranny, with a dana 20 transfer case. I recently tried to adjust the shifter cable after the other one burnt in half on my headers(It has a B&M shifter in it). All worked well, I even changed the trans filter and filled with new fluid. When I had the pan off I noticed a piece of metal(very small, like the size of a pencil eraser, kind of moon shaped...something had broken apparently), but I put it back together anyways and it drove fine for a couple of days. Now it has no reverse, even when I crawl under and manually select the gears of the transmission, and at one point it only had second gear, now it only has drive and park. I think this tranny is toast!!! I basically want to know if I should rebuild it or just buy a new one? What years will interchange? I got a serial # off of the transmission above the pan on the drivers side, it reads as follows... 441272c91m4059 6435.... I want to know what year this come out of so I get the right stuff. The previous owner said a late model scout but who knows for sure....please help me out. I've tried seaching for answers but I'm coming up with nothing.

well i cant tell you what trans is easiest to put in there. being theres peices in your pan... something isnt right... of course im not telling you anything you dont already know. try to give a few trans shops a call, a local one told me they would overhaul mine for 700 start to finish.... these old transmissions are not that complicated.

Moon shaped? Could it be a key? Are there the mopar 727s? you can get a 727 off any dodge truck around the same year as your jeep if they are the dodge trannys. There's no shortage of them, and they're pretty bullet proof, as long as you're not slamming the shifter around (Hard not to owning a jeep) and as long as they don't sit around for too long. If they sit, the upper seals dry out and you won't have reverse, so try and find a fresh one if you go used.

I think I'm just gonna break down and buy a new one from advancedauto...I can get one for $545...that way im assured it will work and be fresh. No guessing games and it will also have a warranty with it. Rebuilding the tranny seems to cost more...anywhere from $600-$900 is what I've been quoted so far. :barf:

If you can get new for $500 go for it. That's a great price.
