http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=831041 this is the thread I'm using for reference
CJ7 tailgate, no rust, the paint is pretty good for being so old. 40 bucks, but there are no backplates.

Sweet! If I didn't already have a YJ hardtop, I'd seriously consider this conversion myself. It looks really nice, Rich.

I've got a yj hard top too, but I couldn't resist, its so classic and perfect.

I have a bad back, 2 surgeries and a broken neck in my past. I'd love to drop a CJ tailgate on my junk, but the thought of having to climb over the back seat to open the thing rules it out for me. It is a classic look though! I wonder of I could mod up a YJ tailgate with a second latch on the other side, to hinge it like the CJ gate. Hmmm....

all that needs to be done is cut the lip off of the lift gate, its just hard plastic. then you can open the hatch before the tailgate.

My lift gate doesn't have a latch. It's annoying. The tailgate holds it down.
I'm actually thinking of adding a latch section from a half door to the right side of the tailgate, and running a rod to the handle to operate it. I'll have to look at it a bit closer before I decide.

I will trade any of you my freshly painted CJ hardtop for your YJ hardtop. You wouldn't even need a tailgate latch. The hatch would hold it closed. You just can't mount a spare to the tailgate anymore.

Man I wish you were closer. I'm going to san diego for a few weeks. I wonder if theyd let me carry mine on lol. I just figured this out last night and im wanting to kick myself for not thinking about this before. Btw harr if you wanna cheat like me I didnt even have to drop the gas tank to do mine. Just fabbed up 2 backing plates with mild unstrapped the tank and slipped the plates behind. 1 was a beotch to get to but otherwise pretty simple. One thing I do wish Id done is just put in an aftermarket skid.

Do either of you have any pics of the latching system?

The hard part of a CJ drop down gate is making the latch work with a hard YJ top. I left mine as a YJ swing gate.

best advice is next time you see one take a quick peek. I can try and take a picture but its so incredibly simple. Its almost like 2 tabs that pivot off the side of the tailgate and hold onto the body. You don't have to modify the body or add anything for the cj tailgate to close.

yea I'm doing the same. Having the wife do custom stitching on some seatcovers and having some floormats made. I just finished the top too and hopefully that will be the last of the work for awhile. Bad part is I'm ready to sell and start a new project. What you planning on the interior?

YOU GOT A HOLE IN YOUR FLOOR! j/k. I was going to do the liner but with winter here I rustoleum'd the entire interior and putting in some carpet for the next 6 mo. Now if someone would balls up and try to put a tj dash in a yj I'd be interested. Good luck and post some pics. BTW if anyone has seen oh consoles other than tuffys can I get some pics? PS: DON WHERE DID YOU GET THE STICKER FOR THE CJ TAILGATE?????

I've got the tailgate in the garage. Knowing that I don't need to modify the body for the latch is good news. My second question is what did you do to retain the cables.

HA! Nice. That looks really clean, Don. I probably never would have noticed the hinges unless you said something.
How does a CJ tailgate work? I've never actually seen a working one up close. My old DJ-5 had a swing gate that I welded on when I chopped it. Is it like an old Chevy, except on the inside, with the chain and the funny shaped latch thing at the end of the chain?
